Ladies Night Out
Ladies Night Out is a program offered by Mission Health and Hospitals in association with Asheville Buncombe Institute of Parity Achievement (ABIPA), AshevilleRadiologyBreastCenter, BuncombeCountyHealthCenter’s Breast and Cervical Cancer and Wise Woman Programs, Housing Authority of Asheville and the YWCA of Asheville. Mission Hospitals Breast Program was awarded a $166,000 grant by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to support breast cancer screening and education programs for underserved women.
Ladies Night Out is the first Thursday night of each month beginning in October 2007 for 3 years. The program covers the cost of a mammogram for women who are faced with a gap in coverage and who qualify for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP). (BCCP is for women who are at or below 250% of the federal poverty level: example a family of 4 with income at $51,625 or below)A very important aspect is encouraging women to join with other women in their neighborhoods to come to Ladies Night Out.
During Ladies Night Out women will be offered free physicals, mammograms, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, and health education (transportation and child care is provided if needed). Arrangements will also be made for them to have pap smears at the Buncombe Co. Health Dept. or other community facilities.
The Mission Hospitals’ Breast Program is working with several community partners to coordinate the program each month. The program identifies women who qualify and provides the general health exams and breast exams. Child care will be available at the YWCA, Mission Hospitals will provide transportation and Asheville Imaging will provide mammography. Volunteers from ABIPA, and PACE
( Parity Achievement and Community Empowerment), Mission Hospitals, Buncombe Co. Health Dept., Project Access and other community groups will be on site to provide education and help women complete their paperwork. These groups also promote the concept in minority, African American, and Spanish communities. Translators are also available during this time. The Dept of Social Services will also help women learn about other resources. For More information, call Ladies Night Out at 828-250-6119.
