LABORATORY SAFETY REGULATIONS

The following regulations have been compiled for the safety of all students performing experimental work in the science classroom. Strict observance of the regulations is MANDATORY by all science students.

Students and parents are to read the following safety policies, sign the form, and return it to the instructor. This procedure must be completed before the student can begin any laboratory activity. The student will keep this copy of the regulations in his/her science notebook for future reference.

**** GENERAL ****

1. The instructor must be present during all laboratory work.

2. The laboratory is to be used for serious work. No horseplay will be tolerated!

3. Perform only those experiments specifically designed or approved by the instructor.

4. Before beginning a laboratory, know in advance what equipment and materials will be needed.

5. Perform all experiments carefully and in such a manner as to assure the safety of all persons.

6. Never eat, drink, chew gum, or apply cosmetics in the lab room. Do not store food or beverages in the lab.

7. Keep your work area clean and uncluttered to prevent accidents. Keep your backpacks under your desk and

out of the aisles.

8. Know the location and how to operate all safety equipment in the classroom, including fire extinguishers.

9. When working with chemicals, you must wear proper eye protection (goggles) to prevent eye injury.

10. When working with lab equipment, chemicals, and hotplates, long hair must be tied back, jewelry should

be removed, and long sleeves should be rolled up to the wrist. Closed toed shoes should be worn.

11. Wash your hands with soap and water after every lab.

12. Report ALL accidents or injuries and ALL breakage or spills to the teacher at once!!!!!!!!!!!

**** EQUIPMENT AND INSTRUMENTS ****

1. Never point the mouth of a test tube toward your face or toward a neighbor while you are heating the

test tube or mixing chemicals.

2. Use tongs or clamps to handle hot equipment. (Hot and cold equipment look the same)

3. Make sure all containers are clean before using them.

4. Pass scissors, scalpels, dissecting needles, and other sharp instruments with their handles extended when

handing them to other students.

5. Wash and dry all sharp-edged instruments separately from other equipment.

6. Turn off all electrical equipment, water, and gas when not in use, especially at the end of the period.

**** CHEMICALS ****

1. Read the label carefully before taking materials from a container. There are many different types of chemicals

that look exactly the same.

2. In case of a burn from an acid or base, wash the affected area immediately with plenty of water. Then report

the burn to the instructor at once.

3. Never taste a chemical or solution. Poisonous substances are not always so labeled in the lab. If you swallow

any chemical accidentally, report to the instructor at once.

4. When noting the odor of any liquid, do not put your face directly over the container. Instead, fan a little of the

vapor toward you by sweeping your hand over the top of the container.

5. To avoid contamination, never return unused chemicals to the supply containers. Be sure that containers used

for chemicals are completely sealed.

6. Dispose of used chemicals, matches, and preserved specimens only as directed by the instructor. Do not use

the sink as a waste basket!!!!!!!
