SECTION 11 53 13 – LABORATORY fume hoods

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01RELATED DOCUMENTS

  1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
  2. Specifications throughout all Divisions of the Project Manual are directly applicable to this Section, and this Section is directly applicable to them.

1.02SUMMARY

  1. Furnish and install pre-piped and pre-wired chemical fume hoods, and radioisotope hoods, including bench mounted hoods, floor mounted hoods, high performance hoods, and full view hoods, complete with accessories.

1.03REFERENCE STANDARDS

  1. The latest published edition of a reference shall be applicable to this Project unless identified by a specific edition date.
  2. All reference amendments adopted prior to the effective date of this Contract shall be applicable to this Project.
  3. All design tested performance, materials, installation, and workmanship shall comply with all applicable requirements and standards.
  4. ASHRAE 110 - Method of Testing Performance Fume Hoods.
  5. OSHA, Federal Register 29 CFR Part 1910 - Occupational Exposures to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories.
  6. ANSI/AIHA Z9.5 - Laboratory Ventilation.
  7. NFPA 45 - Standard on Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals.
  8. Underwriters Laboratories, UL 1805 Laboratory Hoods and Cabinets
  9. Scientific Apparatus Makers Association Standard for Laboratory and Hospital Service Fittings.
  10. Work shall conform to the recommended practices of the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association (SEFA), except as superseded by this specification.
  11. SEFA 1: Fume Hoods.
  12. SEFA 2: Installation.
  13. SEFA 3: Laboratory Work Surfaces.
  14. SEFA 7: Fixtures.
  15. SEFA 8M: Laboratory Grade Metal Casework.

1.04definitions

  1. Plumbing Services Fittings: Gas, air, vacuum, steam, and water valves and faucets; remote control valves, and vacuum breakers.
  2. Electric Services Fittings: Convenience outlets, switches, and control panels.
  3. Plumbing Services Lines: Gas, air, vacuum, steam, water piping, and associated fittings necessary to carry respective services from service fixtures through equipment to building rough-in outlets in floors or walls.
  4. Electric Service Lines: Conduit, junction boxes, conduit fittings, and wire necessary to carry electrical services from service fixtures through equipment to building rough-in outlets in floors and walls.
  5. Visible Surfaces: Exterior surfaces of closed cabinets, backs of cabinet doors, interior surfaces and shelves of open cabinets and of cabinets with glass or glazed doors.

1.05QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Coordinate work of the Section with Section 12 35 53 (Laboratory Casework).
  2. Provide interface products of style, material finish and color in order to produce a homogenous installation.
  3. Qualifications:
  4. Fume Hood Manufacturer:
  5. Work in this Section, with respect to the specific equipment specified herein, shall be manufactured by a firm having a minimum eight years documented experience, with an established organization and production facilities including all tools, equipment and special machinery necessary for specializing in the fabrication and installation of the type of equipment required, and with skilled personnel, factory trained workmen and an experienced engineering department. Each shall have the demonstrated knowledge, ability, and proven capability to produce the specified equipment of the required quality, as well as the proven capacity to complete an installation of this type within the required time limits.
  6. Fume Hood Installer:
  7. Fume hoods shall be installed by the manufacturer, or installing contractor shall be approved in writing by the hood manufacturer for the installation of the specified products.

1.06SUBMITTALS

  1. Submit as specified herein and under the provisions of Section 01 31 00.
  2. Product Data:
  3. Description of hoods, including construction details, materials, gauges, sash lock and release procedure, hardware cut sheets, piping of equipment, wiring and/or control diagrams, including voltage and amperage, and description of re-lamping procedures.
  4. Statement giving face velocity, minimum and maximum airflow, and pressure drop at design operating volume at the operating sash position for each size hood. Note that minimum airflow shall comply with ANSI Z9.5 requirements.
  5. Description of proposed factory dynamic testing procedures.
  6. Complete materials list, including catalog data of all materials, equipment, fan curves, test designs, performance charts, and products for work specified in this Section.
  7. Liner and work surface chemical resistance test data.
  8. Samples: Submission of samples may be required, before fabrication has begun, to clearly show the following:
  9. Each type of specified finish and color range available, or as identified on Drawings.
  10. Each plumbing service fitting.
  11. Each electric service fitting.
  12. Shop Drawings:
  13. Submit complete shop fabrication and installation drawings, including plans, elevations, sections, dimensions, materials and metal gauge sizes, details, fittings, duct connections, schedules, and piping and vents from cabinets below, where applicable. Show relationship to adjoining materials and construction such as details of field joints between units and in tops. Show all fastening types and locations for securing units in place. Identify and show locations, size, and details of filters if they are required.. Identify connection points, locations, and sizes of building services and systems. Provide clear identification where equipment requirements deviate from the service/utility provisions in the Construction Documents. Shop Drawings shall be in electronic format, as well as in the form of reproducibles or photocopies, not to exceed 11 by 17 inch (A3) in size. Blue-line prints are not acceptable.
  14. Coordinate shop drawing submittals of both this Section and Section 12 35 53 (Laboratory Casework) so that each recognizes and incorporates the other’s products.
  15. Air Flow Tests and Certification
  16. Fume Hoods: Provide “As Manufactured” (AM) certification before shipping that each type and size of fume hood has achieved an AM performance rating equal or better than 0.05 ppm forfive minute average with 4.0 Lpm tracer gas release rate at maximum possible sash opening when tested in accordance with ASHRAE 110.
  17. Test reports shall include who performed the tests, the procedures, and the results.
  18. Owner will approve certification firm.
  19. Owner representative may witness tests.
  20. Final approval of testing and acceptance of reportsshall be by Owner’s Environmental Health and Safety Department.
  21. Fume Hood Sound Level Certification
  22. Provide certification of fume hood compliance with design criteria for maximum allowable noise within laboratories.
  23. Provide test data of octave band analysis verifying fume hood is capable of a 50 NC value when connected to a 50 NC HVAC source. Measurements shall be taken 36 inches in front of full open sash, 60 inches above the floor at the specified face velocity.
  24. Record Documents:
  25. Provide record approved product data, shop drawings, samples, test reports, and certifications.
  26. Operations/Maintenance Manuals:
  27. Complete operating and maintenance manuals that describe proper operating procedures, maintenance and replacement schedules, component parts list, wiring diagrams, and closest factory representative for components and service.
  28. Submit certification by an independent testing company stating the equipment is installed per applicable and referenced codes and standards, adjusted and balanced for design operations, and is complete and ready for intended function.
  29. Certify that fume hoods will not exceed design maximum airflow at specified operating conditions.

1.07Product Handling

  1. Contractor shall schedule the delivery of fume hoods when spaces are sufficiently complete so materials can be installed immediately following delivery.
  2. Protection: Use all means necessary to protect work of this section before, during and after installation including installed work and materials of other trades.
  3. Replacement: Any damaged work shall be replaced, repaired, and restored to original condition to the approval of the Architect at no additional cost or inconvenience to the Owner.

1.08WARRANTY

  1. Provide five (5) year warranty on all parts and labor to fix defects in materials and workmanship for all non-movable parts (except lamps).
  2. Provide two (2) year warranty against defects for all control and electrical devices.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01GENERAL

  1. All materials shall meet or exceed all applicable referenced standards, federal, state, and local requirements and conform to codes and ordinances of authorities having jurisdiction.

2.02PLUMBING SERVICE FITTINGS

  1. Provide types of fittings necessary for the services and pressures indicated on Drawings.
  2. Vacuum breakers shall not be installed under exhaust hoods or similar locations that will contain toxic fumes or vapors.
  3. Finish: Polished chrome on brass body with a clear acid and solvent resistant epoxy coating unless specified otherwise.
  4. Equip valve handles with color coded plastic index buttons as follows:

  1. Underwriters Laboratory Listing: Fume hoods shall be UL listed and labeled for compliance with UL 1805. Label shall be attached to the face of each fume hood indicating classification to the UL 1805 Standard for Laboratory Fume Hoods.
  2. Materials: The following materials shall be provided, unless superseded by the requirements listed below for specific fume hood types.
  3. Steel:
  4. ASTM A366 high quality, cold rolled, mild steel, and free from rust, scale, scratches, buckles, ragged edges, and other defects.
  5. Minimum thickness shall be 18-gauge.
  6. Stainless Steel:
  7. Type 304, ASTM A240/240M, with exposed surfaces ground and polished to a No. 4 finish.Minimum thickness shall be 16-gauge.
  8. Welding: All stainless steel welding material shall be of similar type to sheet material. Welds shall be made without discoloration, ground, polished, and passivated to blend with a No. 4 finish.
  9. Liner and Work Surface:
  10. Typical High Performance Chemical Fume Hoods and Standard Chemical Fume Hoods:

1)Fiberglass reinforced polyester liner, 1/4 inch thick, having a flame spread index of 25 or less per ASTM E 84. Color: white. Panels shall have at least a "Laboratory Grade finish" when tested per the chemical spot test in the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association (SEFA) 8 Standard.

2)Epoxy Resin work surface, 1-1/4 inch thick, light in color, having excellent chemical resistance, good heat resistance, and dished 3/8 inch for containment.

  1. Radioisotope or Specified Chemical Fume Hoods:

1)One-piece 16 gauge stainless steel, with all corners welded, coved, and ground. Work surface shall be reinforced for a minimum load rating of 200 pounds per square foot. Provide work surface with 1/2 inch marine edge, in compliance with Section 12 35 53 requirements.

  1. Baffle: Material to match liner.
  2. Glass: Minimum 7/32 inch laminated safety glass. Glass shall not be etched with manufacturer’s name, logo, or any other permanent markings, other than to identify the glass as being safety glass in compliance with ANSI Z97.1. Wired glass is not allowed.
  3. Sash Pull: Full width corrosion-resistant steel with chemical resistant powder coating, stainless steel, or plastic.
  4. Gaskets: White, 70 durometer PVC for interior access panels. Gasket interior access panels to eliminate air leakage and to retain liquids inside the hood.
  5. Fasteners:
  6. Exterior structural member attachments shall be corrosion resistant material; exposed screws are not acceptable.
  7. Exposed exterior fastening devices shall be concealed; exposed screws are not acceptable.
  8. Interior fastening devices: Except where specifically allowed by this Specification, interior fastening devices shall be concealed; exposed screws or caps are not acceptable.
  9. Distillation Racks: Lattice style 1/2 inch diameter vertical and horizontal Duralumin rods and rod clamps to form a lattice of approximate 12 inch squares. Bench hoods shall have three horizontal rods, and walk-in and distillation hoods shall have six. Required in all 8 foot chemistry lab hoods and other hoods as shown on Drawings.
  10. Instruction Plate: Corrosion resistant plate attached to the fume hood exterior with condensed information covering recommended locations for apparatus and accessories, use of sash, and recommended safe operating procedures.
  1. Construction:
  2. Superstructure for Chemical Fume Hoods: Rigid, self-supporting assembly of double wall construction, maximum 4-7/8 inch thick. Wall shall consist of a sheet steel outer shell and a corrosion-resistant inner liner and shall house and conceal steel framing members, piping, wiring, attaching brackets, and remote operating service fixtures, mechanisms, and services. Panels shall be attached to a full frame construction, minimum 14 gauge galvanized members. Panels and brackets shall be attached to eliminate screw heads and metallic bracketry from the hood interior. Front panels shall be factory-punched for service fittings, electrical, control and monitoring equipment. Provide stainless steel, epoxy- or urethane-coated plug buttons for holes not used.
  3. Support structure: Accommodate a distributed load of 250 psf and a single concentrated load of 500 lbs. in addition to the hood weight.
  4. Dimensions: Maximum depth for hoods up to 6 feet in width is 37 inches. Maximum depth for hoods 7 feet wide and wider is 39 inches.
  5. Access Panel: Access to fixture valves and piping concealed in wall shall be through flush access panels on the inside liner walls or through removable front posts. Panels shall be secured with fitted gasket, and tamperproof, epoxy- or urethane-coated, countersunk, flat head screws, or similar method, providing a tight fit. Hook and loop type attachments and panels held by gravity are not acceptable.
  6. Restricted Bypass Fume Hoods for Variable Air Volume or Constant Volume Exhaust Systems with Airfoil: Bypass shall be achieved through low resistance opening at front of hood.
  7. Airfoil: The airfoil shall allow ample room for electrical hospital grade cords to fit beneath it. Sill shall pivot forward to provide cord and trough access. Bottom horizontal foil shall provide nominal 1 inch bypass when sash is in the closed position. Bottom foil shall not be removable without use of special tools.
  8. Sill shall consist of a half-round bullnose on front edge. Airfoil and sill shall be flush with the height of the work surface. A secondary containment trough shall be located in front of the work surface and extend below the airfoil sill.
  9. Fume Hood Sash:
  10. Vertical Sash: Vertical rising sash with auto-return pre-set to an 18 inch opening and full-open lock-out,typical for 4 foot and 5 foot fume hoods or as indicated on Drawings.
  11. Split Sash: Vertical rising post-less split sash, each sash beingpre-set to an 18 inch opening and full-open lock-out,typical for 6 foot fume hoods. Vertical rising post-less split sash, each sash having auto sash operator, typical for 8 foot fume hoods or as indicated on Drawings.
  12. Combination Sash: Horizontal panelsshall be hung from permanently sealed roller bearings with rollers located outside of the contaminated fume hood. Horizontal sliding sashes shall be two or three tracks as indicated on Drawings. Horizontal sash shall have finger pulls on each panel. Each panel shall ride on rollers supported from top rail only per ANSI/AIHA Z 9.5. Sash frame shall be constructed and reinforced to support added weight. Glass panels shall have edge guards on all vertical surfaces. Bottom of sashes shall include self cleaning guides and shall require less than 5 lb-force to operate sashes while meeting fire code requirements for explosion/blast user protection. The sash panels shall be between 12 inch minimum and 16 inch maximum width. Optional for 4 foot, 5 foot, 6 foot, and 8 foot chemical fume hoods, and as indicated on Drawings.
  1. Counter Balance System: Single weight, sprocket and chain, counter balance system to prevent sash tilting and permit ease of operation at any point along full width pull. Maximum 5 pounds pull shall be required to raise or lower sash throughout its full length of operating sash opening. Design system to hold sash at any position without creep and to prevent sash drop in the event of chain failure. Sash shall open and close against rubber bumper stops.
  2. Sashes shall have the capability to be raised to full 28 inch, nominal, vertical opening for loading or unloading of large apparatus.
  3. Exhaust Slots:
  4. Slot air velocity: 1500 fpm minimum.
  5. Locate controls to minimize tampering and interference with normal hood operation.
  6. Maximum slot area shall be less than two-thirds of the cross sectional area of the respective parts of the plenum.
  7. Locate horizontal slots at counter top level, center and top section of hood.
  8. Exhaust requirements: Operate hood at the following face velocity and air flow as indicated on Drawings.
