• Labor and Employee Relations Manager

  • Basic Function: The Labor & Employee Relations Manager will support SJI, SJES, SJRG, and SJG in all HR functional areas, but most specifically employee/labor relations and HR compliance. This person will be responsible for supporting execution of business strategies, objectives and processes through people initiatives. The individual will need to maintain a high level ofconfidentiality.They must also have strong communication and analytical skills, while also demonstrating logical thought process and good business judgment

Essential Functions:

  • Develops sound employee policies and an effective labor relations program to promote a positive work environment.
  • Administers the management of labor relations activities of South Jersey Industries (the company) including advising and assisting in the administration of local labor agreements and contract interpretation, NLRB charges, coordination of grievance handling process through arbitration, participation in labor contract negotiations process including pre negotiation position development, documentation development, coordination of negotiating sessions and preparation of contracts for distribution.
  • Advise and assist line and staff units of the Company in the interpretation and application of human resources policies and programs and collective bargaining agreements. Serve as a clearinghouse for uniform and consistent applications of discipline for policy and work rules violations.
  • Direct substance abuse programs of the Company in compliance with all DOT and NJ BPU regulations and requirements including drug testing and anti-drug education programs and Drug Free Workplace Act compliance.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of appropriate labor relations training programs to support areas of responsibility, i.e., drug testing, coaching and counseling.
  • Track and analyze measures to assess effectiveness of overall employee/labor relations strategies.
  • Maintain and update Workday database on all grievances anddiscipline actions.
  • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues; conduct effective, thorough and objective investigations.Investigates and responds to questions and complaints of employees.
  • Researches, negotiates and writes side agreements with unions and draft personnel policies and procedures.
  • Facilitates monthly labor/management meetings to enhance communication between operators and various unions. Takes appropriate follow-up actions.
  • Consistent with all positions in this classification, additional projects, tasks and/or duties beyond what is outlined here may be assigned as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with courses in human relations, industrial organization and industrial relations, Master’s Degree or JD preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in labor relations, or working in a union environment.
  • A working knowledge of applicable labor relations laws is required.
  • Proficiency with PC-based application, e.g., Microsoft Office and HRIS, etc., is desirable.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and analytical skills are required.
