TITLE: PROPER LABELING OF CHEMICAL SOLUTIONS
PURPOSE: The purpose of this Skills Training is to train the student in the proper method of labeling chemical solutions prepared in the laboratory.
PREREQUISITES: N/A
REFERENCES: 29CFR 1910.1200 (Hazard Communication)
29CFR 1910.1450 (Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories)
SAFETY EQUIPMENT: As outlined in the Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
MATERIALS: Appropriate container: size and design for the task
Appropriate stopper size or parafilm
Chemical label with the NFPA diamonds & NFPA reference
Permanent marker is preferred. Ink pen will suffice
Stock containers of the chemical(s) used
PROCEDURE: Preparation of a Label for Chemical Solutions
1. GATHER MATERIALS
· Gather the appropriate glassware/container for storage of the chemical solution. Any glassware used to make the solution will also need a label.
2. DATA TO INCLUDE ON THE LABEL
The following data MUST be included on the label:
· Chemical Formula(s) / and or Chemical Name(s)
· Concentration of solution in Molarity (M) or Percent (%)
· The NFPA diamonds must be filled in with their correct values; if two or more substances are present use the higher value in the respective diamond.
· Date Prepared, and unless otherwise instructed a default expiration date of 2 weeks after date of preparation
· The Lot numbers from the stock containers of the substances used to prepare the solution
· Preparer’s initials
SAMPLE :
3. PREPARING THE SOLUTION
· Place the label on the container the solution will be stored in.
· Prepare the solution as directed by the instructor or other laboratory handouts, etc
4. FINAL COMMENTS
· Use the correctly sized stopper to prevent evaporation.
· For substances that readily form precipitates at the mouth of their containers (NaCl, NaOH etc.) it’s best not to use a ground glass stopper. Use parafilm or a nalgene stopper.
TRAINING ASSESSMENT: The laboratory technician is considered skills trained in labeling containers with chemical solutions when they have successfully completed the training assessment.
1. Receive 95% on all labeling assessments.
DOCUMENTATION: 2. Evaluations recorded in Skills Training Assessment
Log and placed in the laboratory notebook.
