A performance by Palle Granhoj in co-operation with Århus Sinfonietta.
Granhoj Dans and Aarhus Sinfonietta is twisting and turning the relationship between modern dance and classical music. The ballet music La Création was composed 50 years ago by Poul Rovsing Olsen, and now the music is combined with bodies in motion. Granhoj Dans is adding seven female dancers – each in a rough wooden box - below the performing musicians.

This is a presentation of choreographer Palle Granhøj’s obstruction technique in almost pure form: seven dancers were consigned to crates and never put a foot to the floor. On top of the crates sat the seven musicians for whom the piece was written. “La Creation” presented here was very different from the familiar version (i.e. from Haydn onwards) but – despite the rather claustrophobic expression – found a life-affirming, optimistic counterpoint in Rovsing Olsen’s music. There was something Arcadian about the broadly encompassing flute melody that opened the piece, and the melody and instrumentalism of the entire work convincingly created the fundamental atmosphere with nary a hint of obstruction. All in all, it was a sorely thought-provoking story. The scenography was remarkably simple with the conductor’s score in negative on the dark floor. The dancers were impressive in their folded positions, while the music and the musicians above them spread their wings
