Knob Hill Elementary Proudly Presents

The Great Reading Race:

Mastering the Martial Arts!

Our goal at Knob Hill is for every student to become a proficient reader. We are working toward this goal from our Kindergarteners learning their letters to our fifth graders reading challenging books. We have a school-wide reading incentive program to encourage and reward students for developing their reading skills and reading great books.

All students will be assessed and informed of their starting points in the race. As students reach the first point level, they will begin mastering belts. Students will continue to master belts as they earn points for reading. Students will be recognized at Friday Flag Salute and the Knob Hill library, and they will receive prizes as they achieve their reading goals.

Students will master 10 different belts. Students who master all the belts will have their names entered into a drawing at the end of the school year. The winners of Mastering the Martial Arts drawing will go to lunch and visit Mission Hills High School with Ms. Geldard in a limousine!

Reading Race Rules for Grades 1 through 5

In grades 1 through 5, students earn prizes using the Accelerated Reader program.

1.  Each class takes the Accelerated Reader placement test to determine students’ independent reading levels.

2.  Students select an Accelerated Reader book at their level which has a predetermined point value. Our library books are color-coded and labeled with both the Accelerated Reader level and point value.

3.  After reading, students take an Accelerated Reader comprehension quiz on the computer. Students who pass quizzes earn points in the race.

4.  All reading counts, including books parents read to their children and books read in class as long as students pass the comprehension quiz independently. Your child has access to thousands of Accelerated Reader comprehension quizzes on-line during school hours.
