Happenings

DCon – Key Club NJ District Convention

The 2018 NJ District Key Club Convention is now history. Once again, the two clubs we sponsor did very well. MATES Key Club’s Frank D’Agostino, past Lt. Governor of Division Seven, was elected as Governor for the entire New Jersey District Key Clubs. Way to go Frank!

Southern Regional Key Club placed third in the Kiwanis Family Relations Award, second in the Single Service Award and first in the Talent Show. They also won the “Spirit Stick” for a day.

Is it any wonder why we are so proud of the privilege we have in sponsoring Service Leadership programs?

Maximilian Foundation – Ocean County Realtors 2018 Charity of the Year

The Realtors Community Service Committee of the Ocean County Board of Realtors has selected the Maximilian Foundation as their “Charity of the Year” This honor hopefully will result in obtaining substantial contributions to the foundation this calendar year. The foundation was founded in 2014 with the purpose of strengthening our children to prevent self-destructive behavior. Awareness is raised by working in conjunction with schools (STYLE PROGRAM), as well as by providing funding for drug awareness programs. The foundation also collaborates with principals, counselors and local programs to provide awareness and educational seminars. Kiwanis LBI has partnered with the Maximilian Foundation and is very proud to be so closely affiliated with them. This partnership helps us fulfill our mission of “serving the childen”.

President Rick Schmid will appoint a Nominating Committee for our club officers for 2018-2019 at our meeting Wednesday morning, April 4. The Nominating committee will submit the nominations to the members a minimum of two weeks prior to the Annual Meeting (May 2, 2018). The election will take place that day, May 16,

Side Effect of the March 21 Nor’easter

The Special Education Children’s Easter Breakfast had been held by Kiwanis LBI before Easter for the past 41 years. However, Mother Nature gave us our fourth Nor’easter of the month the same day the breakfast was scheduled, March 21. Not only were approximately 75 children disappointed, but the Key Club and Builders Club kids who help make the children’s breakfasts joyful and successful also were very disappointed by the necessity of canceling the breakfast. It was not possible to reschedule the meeting due to the unavailability of school busses for transporting the children. Club members that usually help with the breakfastst shared in the childen’s disappointment.

Southern Regional High School Key Clubs “Oceans of Love” Dance Marathon

SRHS Key Club in conjunction with Southern Regional’s Student Council hosted the fourth annual Dance Marathon at the high school to benefit the non-profit organization, “Oceans of Love”. The organization assists children with cancer as well as the children’s families. Once again they raised $6,000 for this very worthwhile cause. They are to be commended for all the wonderful things they do to help our community. Kiwanis LBI helped with the project as well.

Kiwanis LBI’s New Website

Several members reviewed the preliminary work our web design agency, Mena Web Agency, has done in the creation of a new website. The preliminary work is exceptionally promising. All those who reviewed the work agree that the designer, Jovan Mena, definitely is on the right track. There are a few refinements that must be made, but the concept and preliminary design are very pleasing. The work is expected to be completed sometime this month. David Young is doing a great job coordinating the work.

“Trash Talk” – A presentation by Bob Rossi

Bob Rossi, Manager of Recycling and Code Enforcement Officer for the Borough of Ship Bottom spoke at our March 14 meeing at the Bay Avenue Community Cednter. His presentation was excellent and very informative.. He had samples available of many items that should not to be placed in the recycle stream. Plastic bags are probably the worst things that sometimes are placed with co-mingled recyclable materials. The bags very easily get caught in the sorting machinery and can result in the complete shutdown of the equipment often resulting in a tremendous loss of both time and money. Pictured below are Mr. Rossi with Kiwanis LBI’s Speaker/Program Chairman, Pete Rossi (no relation).

Kiwanis LBI – Serving the Childen

“Kids Need Kiwanis”

Meet Member Kevin Stretch

Kevin was born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 10, 1970. He is the youngest of four children - one sister and two brothers. Kevin has lived in many different sections of Philadelphia, but spent most of hisSummers on Long Beach Island. He also spent eight Winters living in Europe.

He is a graduate of Archbishop Ryan High School for Boys. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Drexel University, majoring in Marketing and Finance. He completed his studies and graduated in 1994.

Kevin worked in his younger years at his father’s restaurant in Philadelphia. He also spent younger years working and cleaning many bars and restaurants on LBI. Generally, he has been working for himself most of his life. He operates a very successful cleaning business here on LBI – Stretch Cleaning and Restoration.

Kevin and his wife of thirteen years, Viktoriya, live in Cedar Run and have two sons – eight and eleven.

When asked about his interests, hobbies and recreation, Kevin said he loves to travel, play rugby, and surf. He also enjoys spending time helping with the local Cub Scouts.

Kevin joined Kiwanis on August 16, 2017. The opportunity to network is what appealed to him at first; however after becoming more involved with Kiwanis, his focus now is to help to make a difference in people’s lives.

Kevin is aware of the good work and service Kiwanis LBI performs and knows how important it is to have active members in order to “get the job done”. Consequently, he hopes to get some of his friends and colleagues to join and become involved with our club in “Serving the children”. We wish him much success in this regard. It is critical that we increase our membership if we are to remain an active and productive club. All members should try to do the same as Kevin - Bring a friend to a meeting so they can see what Kiwanis of LBI is all about.
