2017 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD INFORMATION AND APPLICATION FORM

I. General Criteria:

·  Children and grandchildren of the Capital City Kiwanis Club members are not eligible to be considered for these scholarships.

·  The Capital City Club Foundation or Donor awards are $600.00 each.

·  Applicants must be graduating seniors of Lancaster County High Schools accepted at any community college or four- year college or university in Nebraska. (An exception exists for the Gwen and Al Farmer Nursing Scholarship offer for a non-traditional student). Scholarship award considerations and selection criteria include:

Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent.

·  Selection will be made with no discrimination as to gender, age, disability, religion or national origin.

·  Applications must be legible; use of word processor is encouraged.

·  All application information will be kept confidential in the selection process.

·  Application forms are due March 15, reviewed for notifying recipients by April 30 and a Club Recognition Dinner will be held on a Tuesday evening in May or June with recipients and guests invited.

·  Awards will be made by checks payable to the college or university and the recipient for crediting to a tuition and fee account. The checks and a Certificate of Award will be presented at the Club Scholarship Recognition Dinner. Attendance at the dinner is encouraged for students receiving the award and their guests.

A.   One application form is to be submitted for consideration of the available awards and must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2017. Mailing earlier is encouraged.

III. Description of Scholarships to be awarded:

A.  Beverly J. Carlson Education Scholarship

·  This scholarship is awarded in memory of Beverly J. Carlson, a former elementary education teacher.

·  The $600.00 award applies to a freshman enrolled in Elementary Education and/or Music Education.

B.  Dottie and Bob Orshek Arts or Law Scholarship

·  This Scholarship applies to a freshman student enrolled in a course of study in Theater, Arts, Music,

Dance or Law.

·  One $600.00 scholarship will be awarded.

C.  Gwen and Alan Farmer Nursing Scholarship

This $600 scholarship is offered in support of a high school graduate or a non - traditional student entering a Registered Nursing (RN) degree program at an accredited Nebraska Nursing Program.

Preference will be extended to graduates of Lincoln North East High School where Gwen and her husband, Alan, were 1947 graduates. However, other students are encouraged to apply for this Nursing Scholarship.

  Non - traditional students must have been residents of Lancaster County in Nebraska for the past two years. Their application is to include completed pages three and four, one recommendation and a narrative about their school activities and recent work experience.

D.  Kiwanis Club of Lincoln – Capital City and Foundation Scholarships.

  These scholarships apply to enrolled freshmen at any accredited four-year institution of higher education or community college in Nebraska and may apply to any major.

  Capital City Kiwanis Club and/or Donor Scholarships of $600.00 each will be

awarded.

IV. Application Instructions

A. One Application Form is to be submitted. If a designated scholarship is indicated but the application is not selected for that award, the application will be considered for any other available scholarships.

B.  A complete application includes: 1), pages three and four, 2), a narrative and 3), one confidential letter of recommendation. Include these items in one envelope mailed to the address indicated on page one.

  Pages three and four may be completed using a computer.

  The narrative is to be double spaced, no more than one page in length with focus on high school and community activities and achievements, educational and career goals and why you believe you should receive a scholarship from the Capital City Kiwanis Club.

C.   Portable Document Format (PDF) and Microsoft Word (DOC) versions of this document can be downloaded from kiwaniscapitalcity.org or Education Quest. The PDF version of this application has fields that are easily filled out in Adobe Reader and Preview (Mac).
