  1. District Profile

Kitsap Regional Library is a mid-size rural library district formed in 1955 serving KitsapCounty’s population of 240,000. Kitsap Regional Library has 9 community library locations, online access to library materials and services, a traveling bookmobile, and outreach services for the homebound and youth.

Branch libraries are located in BainbridgeIsland, Downtown Bremerton, Kingston, Little Boston, Manchester, Port Orchard, Poulsbo, Silverdale, and in East Bremerton on Sylvan Way which includes our service center. Each branch library is a community library, reflecting the flavor and interests of its area. A Kitsap Regional Library card can be used at all nine branches and the bookmobile and materials checked out at one branch library may be returned to any branch.

The library district owns only two of the nine buildings in the system, Silverdale and Sylvan Way. Each of the remaining seven communities owns and maintains its library facility under different arrangements. The Library District provides library services, programming, staffing, materials, and technology for all facilities.

With over half a million items in the library’s collection, library materials circulation continues to increase annually. In addition, the library provides free access to dozens of subscription-based databases and other professional reference assistance. Kitsap libraries are also places for special events and learning, including weekly children’s activities, special teen programs, lecture series, author visits and numerous community events.

Kitsap Regional Library has approximately 205 employees and is funded primarily through a property tax levy. The five-member Board of Trustees governs the Kitsap Regional Library System. Board members are volunteers who are appointed for five-year terms, with no trustee serving more than two consecutive terms. Each Kitsap County Commissioner appoints members of the KRL Board of Trustees. KRL and the County seek geographic representation within the library’s service area.

The KRL Board of Trustees sets policy for library services throughout the system. The Board holds an annual planning retreat where long-range budget, facilities, staffing and other services are discussed in an open forum. The Board also hires and holds accountable the KRL Director who oversees the library organization and day-to-day operations.

KRL has seen continual increases in the number of items checked out at our branches. In 2009, there were 2,678,301 checked out. We anticipate this number to continue to grow.

Additionally, we have seen between 1.3 and 1.6 million visits to the library branches each year over the last four years. We anticipate this volume to continue, depending on the number of open hours.
