Science Lesson Plans Week of: October 30-3 November 3, 2017
Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / FridayStandards:ACOS # 5: Design a solution to a human problem by using materials to imitate how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs (e.g., outerwear imitating animal furs for insulation, gear mimicking tree bark or shells for protection)

Anticipatory
(Hook)
Vocabulary: plants, animals, traits, needs, survival growth
Student Goal: Students will be able to recall what is necessary for plants and animals to survive with 80% accuracy.
Direct Instruction
(TW)
TW ask students to recall what they have learned about plants and animals.
TW review vocabulary
TW write students responses on T -chart
TW Accessing Prior knowledge tab from STEMscopes for standard 1.5 and display it on the SmartBoard.
Guided Practice (SW)
SW orally recall what they know about plants and animals.
SW repeat and use vocabulary words in a sentence
SW look at the projection of the ‘Student Handout.’ They will discuss what is covering each animal (turtle, fish, duck, and monkey) and why it is important to that animal.
Closure : Exit ticket question
Independent: Draw a picture that illustrates a plant survival need. / Anticipatory
(Hook)
Vocabulary: plants, animals, traits, needs, survival growth
Student Goal: Students will be able to recall what is necessary for plants and animals to survive with 80% accuracy.
Direct Instruction
(TW)
TW ask students to turn and talk to a partner about one thing an animal needs to survive. (10 sec)
TW ask students to turn and talk to a different partner and talk about what a plant needs to survive.(10 sec)
TW review vocabulary
TW guide students in filling in vin-diagram to compare and contrast plan and animals needs to survive
TW display the picture cards on the SmartBoard. She will then have students turn and talk to a partner to discuss the following characteristics:
Animals
- Animals with feet.To move.
- Animals with wings.To fly.
- Animals with fins.To swim.
- Animals with fur.For warmth.
- Animals with gills. To breathe in water.
- Animals with smooth skin.Keep cool.
- Animals with shells.Protection.
- Animals with horns.Protection.
- Animals with claws. To catch or tear things.
- Animals with webbed feet.To swim.
- Animals with hooves.Walk on land.
- Animals with sharp teeth. To eat and tear.
- Animals with beaks.To eat.
- Animals with tails. To hang or Plants with roots.Get water from the soil.
- Plants with stems.Brings water up from the soil.
- Plants with leaves.Uses the sun, water and air to make food.
- Plants with thorns or sharp leaves.Protects the plant.
- Plants with air pockets. For floating in water.
- Very tall plants.Helps to get more sunlight (over other things).
- Plants that grow up things.Helps to get more sunlight.
Closure :Exit ticket question

(Hook)
Vocabulary: plants, animals, traits, needs, survival growth
Student Goal: Students will be able to recall what is necessary for plants and animals to survive with 90% accuracy.
Direct Instruction
(TW)
TW continue discussing plant/animal and human characteristics/protections with the students.
TW ask the students to tell about what they have learned, so far.
TW will then pull up the “Do 1 Activity” from STEMscopes on the SmartBoard.
Guided Practice (SW)
SW look at the ‘Human Invention’ cards and the ‘Animal Invention’ cards.
SW discuss how humans have observed animal characteristics over the years to help them create commonsense solutions to problems that they have had.
Closure :Exit ticket question
Independent:SW illustrate one human characteristic that was learned by observing animals. / Anticipatory
