Domain: Counting and Cardinality
Cluster: Count to tell the number of objects.
Standard: K.CC.5 Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
Purpose/Big Idea: Given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects
Materials:
  • Shoestrings
  • Craft beads in multiple colors or pasta that can be strung
  • Resource Sheet 10: Number cards 0 to 20.
  • Resource Sheet 11: “How Many” Recording Sheet (one copy per pair of students)

Activity:
  • Working in pairs, the first partner selects a card and reads the number.
  • Using beads of the same color, the student threads the number of beads as indicated on the card.
  • The student records the number of beads on Resource Sheet 10: “How Many” Recording Sheet.
  • Her partner checks the quantity and then chooses a new card.
  • He chooses a different color bead and threads the appropriate number of beads on a different shoestring.
  • He records the number of beads he used on Resource Sheet 10.
  • Talk together and decide which partner has the fewest number of beads. Circle that number.
  • Repeat this activity 3 to 4 times, encouraging students to select different colors each time.

Guiding Questions:
  • Did you always have the same number of beads as your partner? Why or why not?
  • Was there anything you found difficult when comparing your beads with your partner’s?
  • Who had the least beads most often? How do you know?
*When observing students, do they: count sequentially, tell “how many” are in a set,” demonstrate that the number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement.
