Kindergarten Students Have Become Familiar with the Library Collection for Primary Grades

Library News

1st Trimester

Kindergarten students have become familiar with the library collection for primary grades. Favorite series are Henry and Mudge, and Poppleton.

First Grade students check out science books, animal books, riddle books, folk and fairy tales, and the popular animal books: dinosaurs, reptiles, horses, and pets.

Second Grade students are introduced to new series chapter books every library. Popular series are Franny K. Stein, Humphrey books, Zac Power, and Rainbow Magic. Books read to the class as part of their library curriculum are longer with more complex themes and plot. The students participate very well with questions regarding analysis and critical thinking about the different aspects of these stories.

Grades K, 1, and 2 also enjoy the holiday books I introduce into the curriculum: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Grades 3, 4, and 5 are experts with the parts of the book and important publishing terms for writing bibliographies for reports.

The orientation lessons to the online library database, Destiny, have allowed students to access the library database not only from the school library, but also from home and the computer lab. Web Path Express, in Destiny, is an excellent controlled search engine for Internet research, and the students have been taught how to locate this important link.

Celebrate Books for grades 3, 4, and 5 are monthly book talks for each class.

A wide variety of books are spread along the length of the library tables with short book talks to capture the students’ different interests in reading.

Overdue Procedures

Library books have a 2 week check out loan period. Overdue notices are emailed to parents every Wednesday at 4 PM. A parent can request a renewal of an overdue book by email, and I can renew the book online. The student does not need to bring the book to the library. Keep reading!

Grade 6 library curriculum has the emphasis on research: searching skills, data bases, and reference books. Students have done research on Ancient Egypt using a picture book with striking illustrations, web sites, and nonfiction books.

Copyright and plagiarism concerns have been reviewed. The students completed a detailed unit on evaluating web sites on the Internet for accuracy, purpose of the web site, currency and style.

eBooks are in the St. Louise School Library data base! A presentation of how to access and use eBooks was given to grades 3 through 8.
