Introduction
During adolescence, teenagers experience several major changes in cognitive and emotional development. These changes are influenced by both biological factors, such as brain development, and environmental factors, such as the influence of peers and parents. Psychologist Diana Baumrind (1991, 1993) carried out a series of longitudinal studies on parentchild and parentadolescent interactions. She has identified a number of parenting styles that are associated with different kinds of adolescent development. I will review the parenting styles associated with Diana Baumrind to answer the following questions for discussion. First, I will identify the parenting style of Kris Kardashian and explain how her parenting style affected the development of self-esteem in her children in childhood, adolescence and adulthood.

Another way of looking at whether or not someone is a good parent is to see what morals they have passed on to their children. I remember in the first episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians that there was a stripper pole being used by the two youngest sisters, Kendall and Kylie Jenner. I thought this was inappropriate, to say the very least. There might not be anything wrong in and of itself, but it is certainly a sign of permissive parenting. Permissive parenting has been associated with a lot of risk factors for children as they enter adulthood and have to interact with the rest of society. The high rate of divorce in the family does not seem to be a good omen and it matches what people think of the permissive parenting style. The permissive style does not prepare people for life because they have had no boundaries so they don’t understand such a concept when it comes to other people (To Get Good Grades, 2013).
Kris Kardashian is seen as being a permissive parent. Certainly this would not aid in developing a strict code of ethics, as well as develop moral reasoning in her children (Baumrind, 1991, 1993). The permissive parenting style may give her children too much permission to do whatever they want to do without setting certain boundaries that are required for the children to adhere to in terms of their life choices as well as their connections and/or relationships with others.
The next question that I will answer is do I think that parenting styles are generational? Would Kim Kardashian’s children parent in the same style?
Generational Parenting
Parenting styles are generational. When you think of parents that were born in the 1940s and how they grew up without as much advanced technology as what exists now, plus without as many societal changes that exist now – often times parenting is highly associated with environmental connections as Baumrind (1991, 1993) states, as well as being biological too.
Due to the biological nature of parenting, it is likely that Kim Kardashian’s children will raise their own children in a similar fashion according to the generational changes that are to come. The influence of the new biological parent connected with the children’s children will also play a role in changing and/or adapting the parenting style of the children’s children so it would definitely not be exactly the same.
Conclusion
Kim Kardashian is a permissive parent; however, her parenting style is a suggestion of both biology as well as a sign of the times. Through the generational continuation of her children, the parenting style will continue to change as well.
