FACS Rationale:

The mission of the Keytesville R-III School District’s Family and Consumer Science program is to prepare youth for the work of the family. The ultimate aim of our program is to strengthen families, empower individuals to take action for the well-being of self and others in the home, workplace, community, and the world.

Course Rationale:

The purpose of this course is to improve the health of Missouri citizens, performance competencies in the family/individual health course taught in Family and Consumer Sciences Education programs enable students to:

a)construct meaning pertinent to health care knowledge;

b)communicate effectively with family members and health care providers;

c)solve problems impacting health and wellness; and

d) make responsible health care decisions involving individuals, families, and communities.

Course Description

This course meets the state requirement for .5 credit health for graduation. This is the first course in a sequence preparing students who are interested in pursing a career in health, nutrition or working with children. This course meets the needs of today’s students and focuses on the promotion of personal and family health throughout the life span. It includes concepts in communicable diseases, family relations, substance abuse, nutrition, sports nutrition, fitness and other concerns pertaining to the development of personal and family health. Career opportunities in health-related fields are investigated. Family/Individual standards are aligned to the National Health Standards.

Students may be required to work on their portfolios that will help them prepare for their postsecondary education and/or employment.

Students may be given the opportunity to job shadow to help them learn more about an occupation for which they have an interest. Before job shadowing students will complete activities in the FACS Job Shadowing Handbook.

Grading Policy

The grade scale in the student handbook will be used.

  • Grades will be based on daily assignments, tests, quizzes, participation, employability traits, projects (group & individual), and other activities as assigned.

Special Projects/Assignments

  • Health Magazine Article due each week
  • Participate on LifeSmarts Team

Advice:

  • Use class time given to work on projects.
  • The final exam for this class is lengthy and will consist of information from tests, quizzes, and projects covered throughout the semester. When you get your tests, quizzes, and projects returned to you, go over them, and make sure you correct any answers that you might miss to use these as a study guide for your final.
  • Bring your necessary supplies daily.
  • Bring a book with you to class daily to read in the event that you finish your class work early.
