Playing with Words

Programme Outline

Have you ever seen the kind of magic that cuts things in half? In a fast food shop, Mr Magician cuts the burgers in half with his magic. Even the words on the menu and the words in a picture book are separated. The children love the trick very much. However, a woman finds that her red handbag disappears after his magic. She thinks the magician stole it. Is Mr Magician a thief or a magician?

Key Stage 1 Learning Targets

To develop an ever-improving capability to use English

~ to recognize some obvious features of the English Language in simple spoken and written texts such as the combination of two small words and the sound patterns of English; and apply this awareness to one’s initial learning and use of the language (K.S.f)

~ to develop an awareness and an enjoyment of the basic sound patterns of English in imaginative texts through activities such as participating in rhymes and singing songs (E.S.a)

Communicative Functions

1. Identify several kinds of food and drink and describe quantities

2. Identify several kinds of insects and sea creatures

3. Use interrogatives to ask questions such as “Is he a thief?” and “Is this a new magic book?”

4. State opinions such as “I don’t think he’s a thief.” and “I think he’s a magician.”

Suggested Activities

1. Motivate pupils by bringing the pictures and the cutouts of the words in COPYMASTER 1 to class. Ask them to put any two words together to see if a new and meaningful word can be made.

2. Explain to pupils that not all combinations of words can make new meaningful words but they can explore and try to find the trick as they learn new vocabulary items. That way, pupils can read and pronounce new words more easily.

3. Briefly explain to pupils the programme and the main characters: Mr Magician, Melissa and Max.

4. To expand pupils’ vocabularies, draw their attention to the meanings of the single words and the new meanings after the words are combined, although some of them may not make sense.

5. In COPYMASTER 1 pupils put two words together to match the pictures.

Answers:

a. Meatballs

b. Sandwiches

c. Hamburger

d. Cheeseburger

6. In COPYMASTER 2, pupils can sing along to the lyrics to discover the joy of combining words.
