GRADING CRITERIA / POSSIBLE EVIDENCE
P3 / Describe the methods used to identify hazards in a working environment. / Description of risk assessment and investigations
P4 / Describe how hazards, which become risks, can be controlled. / Describe different control measures that could be taken resulting from a risk assessment, such as guards, PPE etc.
P5 / Carry out a risk assessment on a typical item/area of the working environment. / Results of practical task in one of the workshops.
P6 / Suggest suitable control measures after a risk assessment has been carried out and state the reasons why they are suitable. / Results of practical task in one of the workshops.
M2 / Explain the importance of carrying out all parts of a risk assessment in a suitable manner / Justify why each stage needs to be completed and state consequences of not doing so.
M3 / Describe how control measures are used to prevent accidents / Describe how the control measures identified in P6 will prevent or reduce the risk of hazard being realised.
D1 / Justify the methods used to deal with hazards in accordance with workplace policies and legal requirements / Study accident trends over the last 20 years and justify how control measures have been used to reduce accidents
Scenario
You are a new trainee in an engineering company and part of your induction involved a short course on health, safety, risk assessment and welfare. Before you can start your training in one of the workshops, you need to demonstrate your understanding of health and safety by completing the following tasks.
Tasks
Task 1 Describe how hazards in the workplace can be identified e.g. risk assessment, safety checks, accident investigation etc. P3
Task 2State a range of control measures that could be used to remove or reduce the risk of hazards in the work place and briefly describe each e.g. guards, PPE etc. P4
Task 3Carry out part one (hazard identification) of a risk assessment on a piece of machinery or an engineering activity that you have carried out to identify the potential hazards and record your findings on a sample risk assessment form, for example:operating a drilling machine, a lathe, a milling machine, moving a heavy load, soldering, use of PCB bath etc. P5
Task 4Complete part two (Control measures) on the sample risk assessment form to identify suitable control measures to remove/reduce the risk and briefly explain why they are suitable/acceptable. P6
Task 9 Describe in detail the reasons why it is important to carry out all parts of a risk assessment and the consequences that could result from failure to do so e.g. identifying a hazard but not selecting suitable control measures or failing to put them into place. M2
Task 10 Describe in detail how five different control measures are used to prevent accidents in the workplace, for example: guards fitted to machines, safety signs, training etc. M3
Task 11 Study accident trends in industry over the past 20 years and justify how different control measures have resulted in fewer accidents e.g. the introduction of different legislation, risk assessment etc. D1
Note: For task 11, you are required to carry out your own researchand investigation into accident trends in industry to achieve the distinction outcome.
