Please note that this Fact Sheet defines the working aged population as aged 18–64 years, to reflect the minimum age of entitlement to most benefits and the age of eligibility for New Zealand Superannuation. All information in this fact sheet refers to working aged recipients of the benefits concerned. Please note also that trends in numbers receiving income tested benefits are more reliably shown by comparisons between the same quarter 12 months apart than by comparisons between consecutive quarters.

Between March 2001 and March 2006, the number of working aged people receiving income tested benefits in the Auckland region as a whole has decreased by 19,375 (18 percent). Over this period, the number of working aged people receiving income tested benefits:

·  decreased in 33 of the 34 service centres in the Auckland region

·  showed a steeper decrease than the overall figure for the Auckland region in 18 of the 34 service centres.

Between March 2001 and March 2006, the number of working aged people receiving Unemployment Benefits in the Auckland region as a whole has decreased by 24,934

(65 percent). Over this period, the number of working aged people receiving Unemployment Benefits:

·  decreased in all of the 34 service centres in the Auckland region

·  showed a steeper decrease than the overall figure for Auckland region in 19 of the 34 service centres.

Between March 2001 and March 2006, the number of working aged people receiving Domestic Purposes Benefits in the Auckland region as a whole has increased by 521

(two percent). Over this period, the number of working aged people receiving Domestic Purposes Benefits decreased in 16 of the 34 service centres in the Auckland region.

Between March 2001 and March 2006, the number of working aged people receiving Sickness Benefits in the Auckland region as a whole has increased by 5,140 (47 percent). Over this period, the number of working aged people receiving Sickness Benefits:

·  increased in all of the 34 service centres in the Auckland region

·  showed a smaller increase than the overall figure for Auckland region in 20 of the 34 service centres.

Between March 2001 and March 2006, the number of working aged people receiving Invalid’s Benefits in the Auckland region as a whole has increased by 3,546 (25 percent). Over this period, the number of working aged people receiving Invalid’s Benefits:

·  increased in 33 of the 34 service centres in the Auckland region

·  showed a smaller increase than the overall figure for Auckland region in 18 of the 34 service centres, and a decrease in one additional service centre.
