HERITAGE TRANSPORT SHOW RELEASE

JANUARY 2014

NEW AND EXCITING ADDITIONS

The annual Heritage Transport Show will take place on Saturday 5th April 2014. The Kent County Agricultural Society will host the fifth successive event to be held on the extensive Kent Showground site, just off the A249, Detling where owners and enthusiasts will celebrate transport through the ages.

Lucy Hegarty, organiser said “The event starts at 10am and closes at 4pm. Adult tickets remain at an affordable £8 with children under 12 attending free of charge. The Heritage Committee is passionate about the Show and encourages entries from all over Kent and the South East as well as nationally. We even get international entries of vehicles.”

This year one of the entries, a 1929 Guy Flatbed lorry was purchased new by the present owner’s great grandfather in Australia. Initially it was used to cart wheat and wool from the family farm to the local railway station. During World War 2, a gas producer was put on the lorry to help ease petrol shortages. It was lovingly restored by the present owner’s father in 1985 and brought back to the UK in 2006.

One of the highlights of the event is the running of buses and coaches during the Show. Visitors are able to catch a number of different makes and models around the Showground. With several stops it is a unique and popular way to see the whole Show.

2014 will see anniversaries for the bus fraternity. It is the 60th anniversary of the AEC Reliance, 75th anniversary of London Transport RT and the 60th anniversary of the iconic Routemaster.

Bernard Pike, Chairman of the Heritage Committee said, “This is a big year for bus enthusiasts with AEC celebrating a double 60th with their production of both the Reliance, a single decker bus and the Routemaster, probably the most well-known double decker. We are delighted that these milestones will be celebrated and recognised at the Heritage Transport Show.”

New for 2014 will be a farmers’ market, now hugely popular in the county with 44 venues. The Heritage Transport Show will welcome stallholders from regular farmers’ markets in Tonbridge, Elm Court Village and Aylesford.

Lucy Hegarty, Show organiser said, “The Show continues to be a success with transport enthusiasts however, in more recent years we have gained a different type of audience who not only enjoy the vehicles but also are looking for an interesting day out. A farmers market will be a unique addition for visitors. Kent has a large number of wonderful artisan producers who showcase the county’s huge larder.”

Car and Bike Clubs from around the South East set up displays with members exhibiting in many cases concourse standard vehicles. The large agricultural machinery section tells the story of the mechanization of the farming industry and the vital role tractors played.
