Kelis – Caught Out There Video details
“Hype Williams presents” followed by “Kelis” and “Caught Out there”, each in blue over a scene of a deserted bar or cafe. Piano music before song begins at 0.10.
A heart monitor. A young man is on the table being given electric shock cardiac treatment. Kelis is outside the theatre in dark glasses and dip-dyed blonde/red hair, remonstrating about “all the women out there who’ve been lied to by their men”. As with all following scenes, this is intercut with close-up shots of Kelis, in a pink top and choker, singing in front of a black background under blue-tinged lighting.
Switch to Kelis sitting at a kitchen table, burning letters and telling the story (“last year, Valentine’s day...”). The young man lies on the floor, motionless in his body but with his eyes open and mouthing the ad lib parts (e.g. “He’s lying” and “No”). Kelis angrily addresses him as she continues.
Chorus (“I hate you so much right now”): Kelis trashes the living room, upending the table and throwing a chair and records off shelves etc.
Second verse: Kelis in the bath in a blue tiled bathroom, looking through photos. Her cheating lover responds from the photos, such as saying “I love you” in response to the line “so far from sincere” (where he can be seen partying with other women). A stressed Kelis continues angrily singing the story in a towel on the bathroom floor.
A woman in curlers furiously emerges from a house, holding a red placard reading “No More Lies”. This shot quickly switches to Kelis (“Come on!”) leading a women’s nighttime street protest. She is wearing a black bomber jacket and pink/white crop-top. Other placards include “Men suck”, “Freedom”, “I hate you now”, “I hate you right now”, “Power” and “Be free”.
Switch to Kelis in a cell, with her arms wrapped round herself (possibly in a straitjacket or giving the impression of one). This scene is quickly intercut with the Kelis close-ups against a black background and the protest scene.
Third verse: Kelis on a sofa (“...so vulgar, not me, why the hell her?...”). The cheating boyfriend figure sits behind her on another chair, reading. His face is covered in bruises and he continues nonchalantly ad-libbing. Cut to Kelis with the wall behind, followed by the boyfriend and the wall behind him as he backs away from Kelis. She pokes him in the chest and pushes him. (“I got something for ya’ll since you’re caught out there.”)
Chorus: Switches back and forth between an upper shot of Kelis in shades (moving through the bar (?) and gesturing as she shouts “I hate you so much right now”) and the marching women’s protest (minus Kelis for a few takes). The women are visibly angry.
Chorus ends: a more distant shot of the women with Kelis at the front. Fireworks are behind them. Switch to Kelis and a crew of guys dancing and posing outside the hospital theatre. Back to the protest: an upper shot of Kelis (with the protesters behind her) reaching nearer the screen and pausing. Screen goes to black.
