A NOTE FROM THE TEACHER

February 4, 2014

1. Keeping Track of Reading Activity

Today, the First Grade class will start the “Keeping Track of Reading” activity to develop reading fluency and comprehension skills. This activity is an everyday reading at home. Your child may read a book or parts of a book independently or with a parent’s help for at least 15 minutes each weekday and 30 minutes over the weekend. I’ve been doing this activity for many years now. Parents and I found it very helpful. It boosts children’s confidence to read independently.

For fluency purposes, may I ask that your child reread everyday our leveled reader and decodable books I will send home. I will set aside every Friday for each reading group to read these leveled and decodable books in class. If there is still time, encourage your child to read a page or a short story he/she likes.

A “Keeping Track of Reading” form will be attached in your child’s binder for him/her to write down the title of the story and the pages (Please keep this form in your child’s binder for checking). List of sight (word wall) words are also written on this form. To give your child the sense of responsibility in doing this activity, encourage him/her to write the title and pages read. This form has to be signed and returned to class every Monday. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

2. Homework

Due to our “Keeping Track of Reading” activity, you may see a change of the volume of our homework. This is to give priority/importance to our everyday reading at home. I expect ALL students to practice reading at home and complete the form everyday.

Until last Friday our homework were - two pages for each two subjects. This time, I will give at least one page for each two subjects to complete at home unless our homework is to study for a quiz/test or the questions are short. That means our everyday reading at home is part of our daily homework. I hope and pray with our team work (school & home), your child will be a confident and independent reader at the end of this school year.

Thank you for taking your time reading this important note.

If you have any question/s regarding this new activity, please call or write me a note.
