Captain’s Corner

The other night I was sitting on my couch watching TV and the shows were so bad I just turned it off. As I was sitting there I said here I am Lord awaiting your instructions. After a few minutes, I recalled an incident I witnessed - the story of the priest and the parishioner.

This is a true story, it happened while I was stationed in Japan. The priest was young and if I remember correctly it was his first assignment after being commissioned. It happened after church one Saturday night. Our priest and I were standing out front. He was greeting the parishioners leaving and I was waiting for everyone to leave so I could tidy up. The last guy in line finally stepped up and shook father’s hand. He then began to explain how much his sermon had meant to him and how certain things Father had said related to him personally, and how they had changed his perspective on life. He then left. I looked at father and he looked at me. Father then said, “That’s not the sermon I preached today“. I said that’s not the one I heard either. We both stood there for a few more seconds. Father then said “I think God just spoke to us“, and I agreed. God reaches out to us in a manner that is suitable and appropriate for us. The message the parishioner heard was appropriate for him. Take a moment to reflect on a message the Lord gave directly to you.

Marv’s Musings

Love is –

Silence - when words would hurt,

Patience – when another’s hurt,

Deafness – when another’s mad,

Gentleness – when another’s sad,

Promptness – when need is seen,

Courage – when life is mean.

Now This Is Interesting.....

The parable of the rich man and the poor man (Luke 16:19-31) inspired the stirring homily of St. John Paul II at Yankee Stadium in 1979. He said, “We cannot stand idly by, enjoying our own riches and freedom if, in any place, the Lazarus to the 20th century stands at our doors…The rich man and Lazarus are both human beings, both of the equally created in the image and likeness of God, both of them equally redeemed by Christ.”
