Dr. Kathleen O'Connell hastaught courseson RabindranathTagore and SatyajitRay atNew Collegefortwodecades, beginning in 1993. Herteaching, in thespirit ofbothTagore and Ray,exemplifiesNew College'scommitmenttosocially engaged education and pedagogical innovation.

Eligibility

All instructorsare eligibletobe nominatedwho havebeen employed by New Collegeunderthe CUPE3902 Unit3Collective Agreement withinthe current academic yearand who havetaught aminimum ofone halfcourseor130 hoursin the currentacademic year. All categoriesand ranksofinstructorwithin theCUPE3902 Unit 3 employed at New College are eligible, including SessionalLecturers I,IIandIII, Writing InstructorsIand II, and Sessional Instructional Assistants.ForSessionalLecturersand Instructional Assistants, relevant coursesarethose with anNEW designatororjointly offeredcoursesadministered byNew College(e.g.,JQR360H1). The current academic yearrefers to theMay-AugustSummerSessionand theFall/WinterSessionimmediatelypreceding theApril 30deadlinefor the submission ofnominations.

NominationProcess

The Vice-Principal, New College, will solicit nominationsannuallyto besubmitted by April 30. Nominationsmaybe madeby studentson the basisoftheir experienceofthecandidate’s teaching in coursesoffered by New Collegeorin the New College Writing Centre, orby colleaguesteaching in New Collegeprograms and courses, includingfaculty, sessionalinstructors, writinginstructorsandteaching assistants.

Nominatorswillsubmit theNomination Form and aLetter ofNomination outlininghow the candidateexemplifies excellent teaching at New College. Up to two additionalsupporting lettersmaybe submitted. Nominations should be submitted by email to DevangiVaghela at .

Upon receipt ofanomination, the Vice-Principal will confirmthe eligibilityofthe nominee and solicitsupporting materialsfromthe candidatein the form ofateaching dossier (e.g.,ac.v, syllabi, teaching materials). The Vice- Principal will also supplyteaching evaluationsto the AwardsCommittee.

Candidates will be assessedby a committee consisting ofthe Vice-Principal, two faculty members,astudentfromNew Collegeortaking coursesinNew Collegeprograms,andamember of CUPE3902 Unit 3, if possible, the previous year’s winner.Preference will begiven tocandidateswho havenotpreviouslyreceived the award.

The award maynot be conferred every year.
