Kate Burgess Parent Involvement Policy

2013-2014

Statement of Purpose

The school and parents must forge a partnership in order to provide the greatest success for our students. Kate Burgess is committed in its belief that parent support is vital to the success of its students. Given this commitment, Kate Burgess will seek out all avenues to encourage parents to be active participants in their students’ education.

At the beginning of the school year grade levels will meet with parents to inform them of the grade level curriculum and the instructional goals of the year. Parents in union with the school will expect that the students work towards mastering the instructional goals. The school recognizes that there will be students who need extra assistance in order to meet those goals. The school is committed to one-on-one and small group tutoring in order to meet the needs of these students. The tutoring groups will meet before, during, and after school.

Parent Involvement in Developing Policy

Kate BurgessCampus Site Decision Making Committee (SBDMC) is comprised of parents, community members, teachers, administrators, and other staff members. Various methods will be utilized to recruit prospective members to this committee. Our hope is to create a group of stakeholders that represents the entire student body.

This committee meets during various times throughout the year to discuss all aspects of the school program. The parent involvement policy will be reviewed annually. Meetings will be held at convenient times in order to ensure full

participation.

Parent Involvement Activities to Improve Student Achievement and School Performance

A major goal of the SBDMC is to identify ways in which Kate Burgess can plan and implement effective parent involvement programs. The campus will also pursue staff development that encourages staff to establish a strong relationship with parents.

During the year, parents will be provided with:

  • Timely information concerning programs.
  • An explanation of the school’s curriculum and goals, its forms of academic assessments, and the proficiency levels the students are expected to meet.
  • The results of their child’s state mandated assessments.
  • Frequent reports on their child’s progress.
  • A Home-School Compact that describes the parent’s, students’, and school’s responsibilities.
  • Reasonable access to the student’s teacher and the administrative staff.
  • If necessary, notice when a teacher that is not highly qualified teaches their child.

Building the School’s and Parent’s Capacity for Strong Parent Involvement

Kate Burgess will hold an annual meeting to review Title 1 guidelines, AEIS reports, and services offered by the school. Copies of the school’s current parent involvement policy will be distributed at this meeting. Home-School compacts will be distributed during October Parents-Teacher conferences. Interpreters will be provided at any meeting where parents are not English speakers.

Title 1 regulations call for an agreement between the school and parents to bring about the greatest learning in the students. This compact outlines the responsibilities of all parties (parents, staff, and student). The SBDMC is responsible for the creation of the compact. Parents and the school will be encouraged to help explain the contents of the compact with the student.

Parents will be informed of school activities via grade level newsletters, conferences, telephone contacts, and other avenues of communication throughout the year.

Cross-Program of Parent Involvement Activities

Parent Involvement will be a major focus of the school’s education goals. Kate Burgess will find ways in which to involve parent involvement activities throughout the school year.

Annual Evaluation

Parent surveys including questions about the effectiveness of the program will be reviewed annually. All aspects of the policy will be evaluated. The results will be analyzed and results sent to all parents. The SBDMC will revise the policy and the school compact based on the results of this annual review.

Parent Involvement in Activities of Title 1 Campuses

Title 1 funds will be used to provide school wide services to all Kate Burgess students. Parents will be asked to volunteer in school activities and create a supportive home atmosphere. The school and parents will meet to assemble a wide variety of strategies to ensure optimum student success and academic achievement.
