Thanks Gary.

Thank you for your email.

If you know anyone stocking fruit trees, I'm prepared to drive to collect them.

I'll drive to Karratha to collect if Karratha has any.

This would play a significant part in helping the community feed themselves but more importantly for the nutrition for the school students. For us it's a 10 hr round trip to buy food if the roads are open.

We've copped the end of the cyclone today. Heavy rain over the last two days but life goes on.

Many thanks for any assistance or advice as to how we might move forward.

Kind regards

Todd

Hi Todd,

I see the recent cyclone would have brought you a lot on rain etc.

Prior to Xmas, Mina had discussions with me about sourcing fruit trees for you.

Bruce, Clark and Robin – do you know of any members in the WA Rotary network who run plant nurseries or horticultural activities and may be able to assist Todd?

Kind regards

Gary

Dear Gary

Greetings from Parnngurr Community School. We are a remote independent school located about 5 hours east of the Newman in the desert.

Mina Ward has provided me your details as a possible link with an organisation who may be able to source fruit trees for our school and subsequent community.

We are looking to make our school sustainable and healthy. Being able to produce fresh fruit for the community would go a long way to meeting this.

Would you have any ideas on how we might source fruit trees such as black berries, mulberries, oranges, lemons, papaya, pawpaw?

Many thanks for any input you may be able to offer.

Thank you and kind regards

Todd

Hi Mina

I hope your new wheels are getting you around town (and out) in style!

I’m just wondering if you might have Rotary’s Gary Slee email address please.

We would like to push ahead with the fruit tree planning especially now that the weather is optimum for growing.

Thank you

Todd

Thanks for the email Todd.

I have forwarded the information about the trees onto Gary Slee, member of the Rotary Club of Karratha, who may get in touch with you directly to discuss the project further.

I was wondering if you are aware of the Protective Behaviours training happening at the Yellow school in Newman on 29th January, which I understand is open to all school teachers in the area?

Anna, Speech Pathologist, and I will be in Newman on the 30th and 31st January and would love to catch up- we are based at Population Health, next to the hospital on Mindarra Drive. Let us know a time that works with you, or if it is easier we could organise dinner somewhere for Pop health/Parnngurr teachers?

Hope the last few days of term are going well.

Mina

Hi Gary,

How are you?

I had a response from Todd, headmaster in Parnngurr. This was the email conversation:

‘MINA: Fruit trees. The Rotary club of Karratha would love to help support this project, they just have a few questions. Will there be consultation within the community on which trees/plants will be grown- i.e. traditional bush plants or western fruit plants or a mixture of both? My impression was that you would use this as a bit of an education process for the children at the school- again are there any specific goals that you envisaged? Where will be plants be resourced from? Is it a monetary contribution or would some people power be of benefit too?

TODD: (We envisage this to be a project for the community from

Selection of plants which has been consulted on e.g. lemon, limes, mulberry, mangoes, pawpaws,

Ground works – eg post holes dug by community members

Students and community to ‘adopt’ a tree to take responsibility for it (buy in concept)

Students will maintain the trees during the school day

Fruit of the trees to be harvested for snack times but also excess fruit to be distributed throughout the community

The biggest issue is finding how to get the trees. If we can get the trees somewhere in the Pilbara, I will travel and pick them up. We are looking for assistance how to source the trees and get them to the Pilbara.’

As far as options for the girls sanitary products goes, the school have placed their own order for disposable products (free of charge) as a temporary and the community have taken the questions and information I supplied on board and will discuss and get back to me.

My feeling is that it might be of benefit if you communicate directly with Todd about the trees. His email is . I have informed him you may get in touch directly.

Thanks,

Mina Ward
