KAREKARE BEACH RACES 2009 – Sunday 8th March

PROGRAMME AND ENTRY FORM

Organised by the combined Picnic Committee of Lone Kauri Community School, Karekare Surf Lifesaving Club and Karekare Riding Club.

Provisional programme – This is the usual format for our race day with 3 classes of galloping races – for hacks (3 & 6), ponies (4 & 7) and faster horses (2 & 5). Anyone can enter the fun race – race 8. However, depending on entries and if you get in touch quickly, we are willing to include races for any other large enough group – e.g. quarter horses, arabs, miniature horses, younger riders.... the programme may be changed depending on entries received.

Race 1.12 noon HELEN AND LAURIE BIRKS MEMORIAL RACE – This is

a race for local horses and riders only. The winner receives a silver cup.

Race 2. 1.00 p.m. POHUTUKAWA GLADE SPRINT- short sprint – one length of the beach - for Thoroughbreds and faster horses.

Race 3.1.30 p.m. PARARAHA SPRINT – short sprint for hacks.

Race 4.2.00 p.m. WINCHELSEA HOUSE SPRINT –short sprint for ponies.

Race 5. 2.30 p.m. LONE KAURI STAKES –loop race for the faster horses.

The loop races consist of two lengths of the beach with a wide turn marked out with barrels, turning towards the sea, at the south end of the beach. So, all horses go outside the barrels and turn to the right.

Race 6.3.00 p.m. WATCHMAN STAKES –loop race for hacks

Race 7.3.30 p.m.OPAL POOL STAKES –loop race for ponies.

Race 8.4.00 p.m. THE CAULDRON SCRAMBLE – This is a fun race for teams

of 2 people + 1 horse or pony, no galloping, more of an obstacle race.

Entries for races 2 to 7 are limited to 15 horses per race; we reserve the right to alter the programme if necessary.

GENEROUS CASH PRIZES for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places donated by sponsors. Helen and Laurie Birks Memorial Trophy for the winner of the locals race and a trophy for the winner of Race 5, the big race of the day.

All riders must wear approved HELMETS and coloured cover/racing cap if possible.

This is a strictly amateur event, any race horse entered must not have been in professional racing training for at least 3 months prior to 8th March 2009.

The organisers reserve the right to disallow any competitor to enter a race for reasons of safety.

Listen to ZB Cancellations if the weather looks doubtful.

Refreshments will be available from 11.30 a.m. Sweepstake betting on all horse races. NO DOGS allowed.

Karekare Races T-shirts will be available in the new 2009 design.

HOW TO GET THERE – From the Scenic Drive, take the Piha road. The most direct route to Karekare beach is the Karekare road which is very steep, use this only if your truck/float has good brakes and drive down in LOW GEAR. However, we advise all horse vehicles to take the earlier turning, first left, ten mins along Piha Rd – LONE KAURI ROAD – this is all tar-sealed. It is a little longer but considerably less steep.

ON ARRIVAL - Riders, please report to the Entry Tent as soon as possible, to collect your free race card with full instructions for the day. Petrol vouchers for $25 will be offered to the driver of each horse vehicle. Numbered saddle cloths and coloured T-shirts must be collected ONE HOUR before your race starts. Saddle numbers must be returned promptly after your race. Any horse not checked in half an hour before the start of their race will be scratched.
