KARACHI YOUTH INITIATIVE PROJECT – KORANGI ART FESTIVAL

TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR

AN ARTS INSTRUCTOR/EXPERT

1. BACKGROUND:

Karachi Youth Initiative (KYI) and WWF-Pakistan in collaboration are organizing Korangi Art festival for students. This activity seeks to provide Korangi’s youngsters with access to one type of recreation: arts and crafts, which are completely absent, in areas of Korangi. While arts and crafts have traditionally received little importance even in formal education systems, children from affluent backgrounds going to elite private schools have all the requisite facilities to engage in arts and crafts whereas children from low Korangi have little to no access to arts. This is evidenced by lack of arts and crafts facilities in most public and some private schools of Korangi. In fact, most public schools do not even have dedicated teachers for arts of any kind.

Arts and craft, apart from their aesthetic value, also have a huge potential to bring individuals together and to convey social messages in a very powerful manner. Art that depicts social realities and is imbued with messages of peace and prosperity has the potential to counteract the rising violent extremism by presenting an alternative, more peaceful narrative for individuals to aspire to. At the same time, it exposes children to positive values and engages them in recreational activities which helps reduce their chances of engaging in negative behaviors. Additionally, engaging children in arts and crafts gives them an outlet to channel their sentiments in a constructive manner in addition to instilling in them aesthetic appreciation.

Therefore, through this activity, WWF-Pakistan will engage with children and youngsters to create artworks based on messages of peace which will be exhibited in Korangi. This grant aims to provide education, inspire creative and productive behavior and benign activity for 1000 youth from Bilal Colony, Chakra Goth, Sharafi Goth and Sherpao Colony in Korangi in the form of an art competition and artistic skill development.
