Hearing for PublicSchool District Reorganization

February 19, 2007

The Kansasville School Board of Education met in special session Monday, February 19, 2007, in the school library at 4101 S. Beaumont Avenue. The meeting was called to order by Darlene Van Swol – Treasurer at 7:00 p.m. Present were Robert Kordus – President, Darlene Van Swol – Treasurer, Denise Slater – Clerk, Janet Kordus and Mr. Brandt. (Giles Williams – Administrator was not present.)

Darlene Van Swol made a motion for Denise Slater, Board Clerk, to be secretary for this hearing. Bob Kordus, Board President, seconded this motion. Motion passed 3-0.

Denise Slater read the notice of hearing.

All board members present were introduced. Present were Bob Kordus - President, Denise Slater - Clerk and Darlene Van Swol - Treasurer.

Darlene Van Swol notified those present what factors the school board shall consider and weigh as they affect the educational welfare of all the children of all the school districts affected by the proposed reorganization.

An overview of the petition was presented as follows to provide a common background of developments and issues for the school board and those present at the meeting as follows: A petition has been received by Steven Ament to detach a parcel of land from the Burlington School District and attach it to the Kansasville School District.

Before testimony was taken rules applicable to this hearing were reviewed.

Testimony was taken from proponents of the petition after giving name and address to prove residency.

No one spoke in opposition to the petition.

Public presentations were closed and the school board deliberations were opened. The decision alternatives of either granting or denying the petition were reviewed and explained.

Discussion included deliberations on the new tax revenue to the school district, that there was no cost to the school district for this parcel of land, it would not affect any students at this time and that it could be the site for a new school in the future. The school board, as a whole, felt it would be shortsighted and fiscally irresponsible not to accept this land into the district especially with the building moratorium in the Town of Dover coming to an end and the potential additional revenue to the district.

There being no other discussion, the hearing was closed. A motion by Denise Slater to adjourn the hearing, seconded by Darlene Van Swol, carried 3-0. Meeting adjourned at 7:13 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted by

Denise Slater
