PREPARE: Steady beat

PRESENT: Music classroom rules and CHAMPS, steady beat.

REINFORCE: Natural drive to wiggle and move to the beat of music.

EVALUATION: Teacher observation, oral response.

ACTIVITIES: Sing in tune; listening; pass yarn ball on instrumental cue; play singing game, play instruments.

LESSON PLAN:

Greeting: Sing Hello Song, drmsl, response—group. Pass yarn ball to steady beat: each child sings his/her name and passes the ball to the next child.

MTW Review. Music classroom procedures, rules, CHAMPS and the Six Pillars of Character.

MTWThF Intro. ABC Song Songs for Learning, Twin Sisters, #1. Echo sing; practice the ABC’s using laminated alphabet cards. Notice at the beginning the steady beat changes—from slow to fast.

MTWThF Intro. “Ten Little Ducks” Listen to first part & patchen the beat. Use laminated ducks; students sit as their duck leaves story.

MTuWThF Music and Movement from Music for Creative Movement, compiled by John Feierabend. Light, gentle-Grieg, “Little Bird,” Op. 43, No. 4. Heavy, strong-Warlock Basse-Danse from “Capriol Suite.”

MTWThF Intro. Walking & Galloping, SoMK, p.T41, BBp.7. CD2:18. Listen & discover ways to move (walk, gallop). Move with music. Listen to CD2:19 Listening for Walking & Galloping/ Skipping”. Move with recording. Invite children to skip or gallop to One Finger One Thumb Keep Moving SoMK. P.T38, CD2:12. Sing song with finger motions and pictures of body parts listed in song.

MTWThF Review. “My Thumbs are Starting to Wiggle” Spotlight on Music, K:2:5. This song is to enjoy creative movement to the beat (also following directions.) Use props (pictures) —streamers, small unpitched instruments, etc.

MTWThF Review. “One Finger, One Thumb, Keep Moving” Spotlight on Music, K:2:12. Follow suggestions for movement. Draw attention to the Big Book and discuss ways to move to music. Present: the children were moving to the steady beat. Possibly add instruments. Possibly allow groups of students to improvise on instruments. Then play only the steady beat with

teacher direction.

MTWThF-Review “The Old Gray Cat”, Spotlight on Music, K:2:20. Review song previously learned. Act out parts of mice, cat, creeping, sleeping, etc. Possibly add rhythm instruments.

MTWThF Intro. “The Button Factory,” Rock & Songs That Teach, The Learning Station, #4. Follow suggestions for movement. Reinforce: the children were moving to the steady beat. Possibly add instruments. Possibly allow groups of students to improvise on instruments. Then play only the steady beat with teacher direction.
