EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Distribution Division

Job Summary:

Under direction of a crew leader, operates motorized equipment of heavy, medium or lightweight and complexity used in construction and maintenance, of water distribution systems and sewer collection systems. Drives and operates such equipment as dump truck, tandem truck, truck with trailer, backhoe, truckhoe or ditchwitch. May haul refuse and soil, clean water and sewer lines, applicable to work on construction sites. Monitors equipment for safe operation, makes adjustments, and performs incidental equipment maintenance. May include supervision of small work crew. May perform skilled or unskilled labor, as needed. Work is performed with relative independence, but is reviewed regularly for quality, quantity, safety of operation, and care of equipment. Work is evaluated through personal observation for timeliness of completed assignments and proper operation of equipment. Performs other work as requested in support of organizational objectives and to meet customer needs.

Education & Experience Required:

High School diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by one year of experience operating motorized equipment of all sizes or six months experience operating the primary equipment of this position; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. (Equipment Operator II requires considerable proficiency in operating primary equipment of this position.) Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively and to carry out verbal and written instructions. Ability to work outdoors and to perform strenuous physical work. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and to work as a member of a team. Possession of safe driving record and valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain appropriate Commercial Drivers License within 6 months.) Experience making minor mechanical repairs desired. Motor Vehicle Records and Criminal History check, and pre-employment drug screening and physical exam required. Prior water distribution or sewer collection system experience preferred.

Knowledge & Skills Required:

Knowledge of all level of traffic laws and regulations as they apply to traffic and motorized equipment. Knowledge of the operation of heavy, medium and light motorized equipment such as that described. Skill and ability to operate heavy, medium and light sized equipment safely and efficiently. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to give oral reports of work progress. Ability to service equipment daily and perform basic maintenance, to monitor the operation of medium equipment, to make adjustments, and to make operating repairs. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with coworkers and supervisors. Ability to work as a part of a team and to supervise others, as necessary. Ability to give instruction and to communicate expectations clearly and effectively. Ability and willingness to work with a variety of equipment and to perform manual tasks. Ability to perform manual labor in all weather conditions. Knowledge of the geography of the Joint Water & Sewer Commission or the ability to quickly learn. Willingness and ability to perform other duties as assigned in support of organizational objectives and to meet customer needs.
