JV Saints beat Columbia, 14-7

by Dana Newsom

Prentiss Christian School's Junior Varsity Saints played at home on September 30, against the Cougars of Columbia. With this win, the Saints improved their record to 5-1.

Play began with PC kicking off to the Cougars. Columbia moved the ball to the Saints' 40 yard line, where the ball went over on downs. On the Saints' first play of the series, Jason Hinton took the snap and ran around the right side all the way into the end-zone for a 60 yard touchdown run. Unfortunately, a holding call against the Saints brought the ball back. However, Prentiss Christian was able to put points on the board in their second possession of the first quarter. Runs by Layke Daughdrill and Jason Hinton set up the 3 yard touchdown run by Daughdrill. The try for 2 by Jason Hinton was no good.

The Saints played excellent defense on the Cougars' next possession, with a tackle by Austin Herod, a quarterback sack by Kody Miller, and the ball quickly went back to Saints when Wesley Daughdrill intercepted a quarterback pass.

PC took advantage of the interception; Layke Daughdrill passed the ball to Tyler Shivers who ran 16 yards for a touchdown. Layke Daughdrill ran for the 2 point conversion, and the Saints were ahead 14-0.

The Saints were unsuccessful in putting together another scoring drive, but the defense played very well with great tackles by Adam McKenzie, Tanner Hathorn, Hunter Berry, and Brody Matthews; Blake Lightsey got a quarterback sack, and Kody Miller added to his tackle total with another sack, as well.

A quarterback pass gave Columbia a touchdown on their last possession of the ballgame. With a successful PAT the final score was 14-7.

Offensively for the Saints, Layke Daughdrill led with 14 carries for 97 yards. Jason Hinton carried 10 times for 52 yards, and he had 47 yards on kickoff returns. Tyler Shivers carried 3 times for 2 yards. Layke Daughdrill completed 1 of 2 passes for 16 yards. Tyler Shivers received 1 pass for 16 yards.
