SEASON REVIEW 2015

JUNIOR LEAGUE

After last season’s Division 2 title, we once again competed in Division 1. As always in this Division we started the season with the aim of avoiding relegation and securing medals in as many age groups as possible. As you will see, we won 2 and lost 3 galas, thus securing a second consecutive season in the top division for the first time ever. Strong results in the 14’s meant we were the age group shield winners too!

On the next page is the list of all swimmers who competed in the Junior League during the season. Very noticeable this season was the number of new swimmers who competed for the club and those no longer doing so. Excluding those too old for the Junior League we had 13 swimmers who did not feature this year and 18 swimmers new to the competition, I would certainly hope that turnaround is nothing like this next season!

Award. There are no new entries on this list this year, but Hannah added another 9 wins.Hannah is still eligible to swim in the Junior League for another 2 years and whilst toppling Catherine may be step too far, a top 3 finish is certainly on the cards.

IN OTHER COMPETITIONS

JUBILEE

The format of the Jubileecompetition is that the first three rounds are a random draw with teams then graded and placed in the appropriate final. Finishing2nd 1stand 2ndin the opening galas, meant that we qualified for the A Final (having ranked 4th), for the first time in over 25 years.

As expected, the final turned out to extremely tough and with some key swimmers missing, we only managed one victory on the night – well done Ben Haughton!

The whole team can be proud of their efforts though with a special mention deserved for Ben H and Tegan S having to swim seven races and Abigail F who recording a tremendous five personal best times from her eight races – this in turn helped Abigail secure the Swimmer of the Match on the night.

The final team was: Ben H, Callum S, Harry T, Max S, Ronin G, Ryan C, Joshua S, Kian T, Harry F, Sam D, Rory L, Lyra H, Abigail F, Aimee D, Aimee C, Sophie K, Olivia B and Tegan S

INTER TOWN FRIENDLY LEAGUE

Please see the separate season review I publish in the summer to see how we did during the season 2014 > 2015

MANCHESTER & DISTRICT

After a year break, this popular event was back once again at Broughton Pool. There was no heat this year and the contest was a straight final. But once again the outcome was a familiar one as for the fifth time in succession we finished runners up! Captain’s Joshua S and Olivia B collected the runners up shield and Ronin G was a deserving Swimmer of the Match winner.

PERSONAL BESTS

As an indication as to which swimmers have improved their times the most during the year, the swimmers with 9 p.bs and more are noted below.

Including the finalClub Gala of 2015, Abigail Fung leadsthe way with a total of 31personal best times.A brilliant achievement and well done Abigail! Abigailis followed by: Caitlin L 27, Ryan C 26, Aimee C 22, Ben H 22, Harry F, Harry T 22, Rory L 20, Lyra H 19, Joshua S 19, Michael H 18, Sam D 18, Dylan F 17, Kian T 16, Ronin G 16, Callum S 15,

Lois D 14, Joseph E 14, Sophie K 14, Erin 13, Tegan 13, Aimee D 12, Oonagh 11, Sophie Q 11, Max S 10, Mitchell O N 10, Charlotte C 9, Ben L 9, Jessica W 9 and Dominic A 9

(Last year the top three were Sophie Q, Rory L and Olivia B/ Aimee D)

In an exact opposite of last years, the Boys in 2015 averaged more p.bs per swimmer with 10.2 per swimmer compared to 8.2 for the girls. Well done to the Boys!

SUMMER FUND RAISING SWIM

Almost 80 swimmers (and parents) competed in the fun event to raise money for the club in what was an excellent competition. £2,031 was raised and once again, a big thanksyou to Steve Shilley who raised over half of this! Well done to all the swimmers in Daniel Brigg’s winning team, but I must mention that unfortunately 1 in 5 of those who took part failed to raise any sponsor money.

CHARITY HANDICAP KNOCKOUT

This year we had 34swimmers entering the knockout which was the 18th year we have held the event. Sponsor money is still being raised during December and this year we are raising money for Reubens Retreat and Motor Neurone.

This year’s final was between Harry Trelfa and Ben Lawton - Harry who had started on Go in every race, versus Ben who had come from behind in every race. In the climax to a brilliant tournament, it was Harry who came out on top by once again leading from start to finish and in doing so recorded his 5th personal best in a row. This was the first time this feat had ever been achieved and was a tremendous achievement. Well done to Harry and commiserations to Ben.

SPECIAL MENTIONS

Congratulations to the following swimmers, who have attended every single gala the club has competed in* during the season (20) up to and including 24th November.

Ben Haughton and Ronin Giron

This is the third year in a row that Ben has competed in everygala (just like Sophie Quigley last year)

An excellent effort from both swimmers and parents I’m sure you will agree.

* Only swimmers under 13 are eligible for this award (Inter / Jubilee and Junior)

FINALLY

As ever, a big thank you to all those who help with the running of the galas, from taking money on the door, setting up the equipment, scoring, announcing, the runners, raffle donators, timekeepers, those who send up, look after the blocks, takeovers and those who cheer on the swimmers.

As I am sure you all appreciate though, we do need as many parents and senior swimmers to continue to help out in gala’s whenever possible.

I have been very pleased with the help offered for our home galas during the year, which is much appreciated and I would hope that this can continue in the future. If you do not currently get involved and wish to take a more active role, please see me or any of the coaches.

What has been disappointing though has been the number of reminders that have had to be given to swimmers who have failed to tick their names off on either the pool or foyer notice boards. This has proven to be very time consuming and has resulted in far too many last

minute team alterations, leading to an often unsettled team in the Inter Town galas in particular.

I have often said this, but I have no doubt that we run the most professional galas of all clubs and they nearly always run without a hitch. Thanks for your support from both myself and the swimmers and I look forward to this continuing in the future.

And don’t forget swimmers, these are your trophies we have won this year. If you want to take these to school assembly and show off your achievements – please ask!
