DOG OBEDIENCE GUIDELINES

  1. You must have your dog’s vaccinations up to date. These include: distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, kennel cough, rabies and parvo-virus. You cannot bring your dog to class until you have provided proof of current vaccinations. Rabies must be given by a licensed veterinarian.
  1. No dog is to be “off leash” or “free” while in training, except when required while working.
  1. To reduce accidents, dogs should not be fed just before coming to class. In the event of an accident, the handler must clean up after his or her own dog promptly and thoroughly. You should have a plastic bag and paper towels for this purpose.
  1. No dog shall be allowed in class if there is any indication that the dog is not in good health.
  1. If your female dog is in heat, please contact the leader.
  1. You must attend 8 classes in order to show your dog at the Elroy Fair and Juneau County Fair.
  1. Qualifications for a diploma: a.) Attendance at eight classes

b.) Dog’s ability to do work

  1. The weekly lesson is not sufficient for training your dog. A minimum of 15 minutes per day should be spent practicing at home.
  1. All dogs must be restrained from needless barking.
  1. The dog must have a six-foot leash and slip chain collar. Leash should be nylon or leather – NO CHAIN LEASHES.
  1. The instructor shall have complete charge of all training classes.
  1. Each owner is responsible for his/her dog’s conduct and any member or trainee who disregards any of the above rules may be asked to leave class. A dog’s aggression towards people and other animals is not allowed. If the dog cannot be managed by the handler, the dog will be dismissed from all classes.
  1. Each exhibitor must train and show their own dog. Exhibitors may show someone else’s dog provided it is not already being shown by another exhibitor and that exhibitor has worked sufficiently with the dog.
  1. Striking your dog and harsh corrections are prohibited. You will be helped to find more effective ways of dealing with misbehavior.
  1. Always bring to class: water and bowl, plastic bags, leashes and collars, and treats.
  1. Parents are welcome. Visitors must remain outside the training area during class and not cause distractions to the handlers and dogs. Any children in attendance must be supervised for the safety and well-being of all.
