June 2016 Facilities’ Update

Airport High School

  • Tommy King, project manager, is working with Simplex to repair the fire alarm system in the 700 wing. This will allow us to use the two automotive classrooms and the cosmetology classroom without the need for the 24/7 fire watch until we can transition to the new CATE center
  • Contract Construction has begun work on the site plan package that includes removal and reconstruction of the tennis courts with lights, installation of new storm drain system along the first base side of the softball field, re-grading of the area outside the softball field, installation of ADA access to the softball field, demolition of the existing field house, rerouting of sewer and storm lines in the new field house area, demolition and replacement of some asphalt along with some curb and guttering near the new field house area, pad for the new field house
  • Roofing and HVAC work has started on the athletic wing with estimated completion this summer
  • The architect continues to develop the plans for the field house and is going through the submittal process with the Office of School Facilities (OSF.) We hope to have a GMP for the field house for the August Board of Trustees meeting. The architects continue to develop plans for remodeling the other portions of the school previously identified in the schematics

Brookland Cayce HS

  • I-2Tech: Jumper Carter Sease (JCS) presentedtheir design for 2 classrooms and a project labat the June Board of Trustees meeting. Thompson Turner Construction priced this as part of the overall renovation of BCHS. The Board of Trustees approved the GMP of $626,487.00 presented by Thompson Turner at the June meeting. We hope to complete the I-2Tech project in August
  • JCS presented early schematics for remodeling and the new arena at the June Board of Trustees’ meeting
  • Roofing work has started on the south wing and north wing with estimated completion this summer
  • Painting of the south wing has started with estimated completion this summer
  • The preliminary bids for upgrading the baseball and softball fields came in considerably over budget. Therefore, we have revised the plans and held the pre-bid meeting on June 8 with bids due on June 15. With the revised plans, we anticipate the project staying within budget

Bulldog Boulevard

  • The trees have been removed and grading has begun and the building pad is substantially completed. Site utility work began the week of June 13 with footings beginning the week ofJune 20

Busbee Creative Arts Academy

  • Painting has started and should be completed this summer
  • We are also in the process of getting prices to install some additional sidewalk , installation of a paved playground area, and some canopy extension at the bus loop

CATE Center

  • Jumper Carter Sease presented final schematics for the Board of Trustees’ consideration at their June meeting. The Board of Trustees gave approval for the architects to proceed with Design Development plans for this project
  • We hope to start an early site package this fall with a targeted opening in January, 2018 with some luck and good weather

Congaree Elementary

  • HG Reynolds started the site work.This project includes a new cafeteria and kitchen with a stage, converting the existing cafeteria to a multipurpose PE area with a retractable wall opening to the cafeteria, installation of a new overhead sprinkler system, installation of new ceilings in a large portion of the school, conversion of the current multipurpose PE area into collaborative/office space, remodeling of the larger restrooms, conversion of some classrooms into smaller spaces for smaller classes, installation of new water line to the building, extension of some canopy, etc.

Congaree/ Wood

  • We have received bids for the ADA access to the playground. The bids came in over budget. Consequently, we have asked MB Kahn to give us a price to do the work under CM at Risk. Since they did the estimates of this project that met our budget, we hope they will be able to complete the work within budget. If this does not work, we will look at VE options and conducting the work as part of the bond referendum work
  • The architects continue to work on the construction documents for the classroom additions, canopy extensions, and remodeling of other portions of the school
  • Roofing and replacement of HVAC units has started with estimated completion for this summer

Fulmer MS

In order to better determine the money available for overall construction, we are in the process of collecting cost estimates for roofing and HVAC replacement before continuing on the design presented to the Board of Trustees in April. We have asked Cumming Construction Management, INC. to assist us with these estimates

Northside MS

  • Painting began the week of June 13 with estimated completion this summer
  • Work to repair or replace the scuppers on the roof has been bid and the plan is to perform this work in the summer
  • We are in the process of getting prices to install some new guttering on the front canopy this summer
  • We are in the process of receiving bids to install a new safety fence to separate the walking trail and the playground. We hope to complete this work by the end of the summer

Pair Education Center

We have received bids to conduct roofing repairs to extend the life of the building for another five years to allow us to use this facility as a swing school for our construction projects

Pine Ridge MS

The design team continues to work through the design process with OSF and work is scheduled to begin this fall

Springdale ES

Boomerang Architects and MB Kahn are working to price out the schematic design approved by the Board of Trustees in May with plans to present their findings to the Board of Trustees in August

District Wide

  • We now have the ability to transition to a new camera system. We are in the process of creating a plan to start replacement of some of our oldest cameras
  • We continue to research and price our options for keyless entry, upgrading our security system and replacing our phone system
  • Mr. King has started carpet replacement at Congaree-Wood Early Childhood Center and replacing carpeted areas with Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) at Wood Elementary
  • We continue to work on a plan to upgrade lighting at several of our schools
  • We have bid out and awarded trash pick-up and recycling to Advanced Disposal. That contract begins July 1
  • Defender Services picked up the cleaning services June 1 and the initial reviews have been very positive
