JT - MINNIE MAUDE CHARITABLE TRUST SCHOLARSHIP

The trust’s primary goal is to provide higher education opportunities through financial assistance to deserving and needy students in the Danville and surrounding area. Scholarships will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and promise, financial need and other related selection criteria.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a resident of Pittsylvania, Halifax, HenryCounties and all of the cities located in these counties for a minimum of twelve months at the time of the application
  • Attend an accredited public or private, two or more year college or university, or and institution offering a one year certificate degree

MARY JORDAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Mary Jordan Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Mary Wescott Jordan who died at the age of 23 following heart surgery. The award is sent directly to the educational institution of the recipient’s choice.

  • Be a graduating seniors
  • Attend a college, university or seminary

THE CAROLE JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Carole Johnson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1963 by friends to memorialize a young lady who was devoted to a variety of academic, community, and extra-curricular activities at GeorgeWashingtonHigh School. The purpose of the fund is to recognize young women who are regarded as showing promise of future achievement and service. Students for the scholarships will be selected on the basis of; Christian character, unselfish service to others, potential for future contributions to the human community, extra-curricular activities, academic achievement and personality. Scholarship recipients will be students who best exemplify Carole Johnson’s commitment to academics, school and community service activities, and dedicated to unselfish service to others. Scholarship funds will be awarded on a competitive basis to a student or students, who have been admitted to an accredited four-year college or university.

Eligibility:The student must:

  • Be a senior lady graduating from GW June 2010
  • Demonstrate outstanding commitments to academics, school and community activities, unselfish service to others and potential for future contributions to the human community
  • Plan to enroll in an accredited four-year college or university in the continental United States the following academic year

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA SCHOLARSHIPS

Jerome Holland Scholarship – The Ron Brown Foundation runs this outstanding award program, which is designed to attract academically talented African-American students from across the nation to the University of Virginia. Approximately five scholarships are awarded annually for $20,000 for out-of-state students and $10,000 for Virginians renewable annually. Holland scholars are selected based on their academic performance, leadership capabilities and potential as role models for their peers. Holland scholars have averaged 600 on each section of the SATs and are in the top 10 percent of their graduating class. Additional information can be found at

University Achievement Award - This scholarship program is designed to attract exceptional diverse Virginia students to the University of Virginia. This award covers full tuition. All in-state applicants will automatically be considered for this award. The most competitive applicants will demonstrate through Part II of the application that they have special talents, unique personal characteristics, and/or pressing needs. Academic merit, leadership, and citizenship are primary considerations. A student must also satisfy at least two of the following conditions: have a history of overcoming disadvantage, be a first generation college student, be a member of an underrepresented minority or ethnic group, be a member of a low-income family, reside in a rural or inner-city population or have been raised by a single parent.

Walter N. Ridley Scholarship – The Black Alumni Association sponsors this scholarship to support African American students who will enroll at the University of Virginia. Several scholarship ranging from $2500 to $10,000 are awarded to students after they have accepted their admission to the University of Virginia. These students typically have excelled academically in school, usually in the top twenty percent of their class, and have special talents or leadership qualities. SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA TOBACCO LOAN FORGIVENESS SCHOLARSHIP

The Southside Virginia Tobacco Loan Forgiveness Program Scholarship Funds are provided by the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission to students in the Southside Virginia area. This is a loan, if the student does not return to the counties covered by the program to work; the student must pay back the money borrowed. If the student returns to the counties after completion of their degree to work their loan will be forgiven 1 year for each year they work. For example if a student receives this money for four years, and they return to work in one of the specified localities for four years they do not have to pay back any money. The monies can be used for in-state or out of state, private or public colleges and universities.

  • Plan to attend a 4 year accredited college
  • Have a 2.0 GPA in fall of 2009

SONY KINGOFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In honor of Sonny Kingoff, a longtime supporter of academics and athletics at GWHS, a scholarship is being offered to a graduating senior who has participated in varsity sports (including cheerleading).

  • Be a graduating senior
  • Have participated in any sport, including varsity cheerleading.
  • Have shown high moral character, have maximized his or her ability in sports endeavors, and have exhibited leadership

THE VIRGINIA LATINO HIGHER EDUCATION NETWORK (VALHEN) SCHOLARSHIP

The Virginia Latino Higher Education Network, an organization in the Commonwealth dedicated to support the success of Latinos in higher education is providing an annual scholarship to a deserving student of Latino/Hispanicheritage who lives in Virginia. NBFAA YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP

The NBFAA launched the Youth Scholarship program in 1996. The program was created to promote goodwill among the electronic systems industry and police and fire officials by providing college scholarship awards to their deserving sons and daughters.

  • Be a graduating high school senior
  • Be enrolling in an accredited college or university after graduation
  • Be the child of a parent who is a full-time paid member of the police or sheriff’s department or fire department in the state where the student applies

VSGA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM OF THE VIRGINIA GOLF FOUDATION

The scholarship program is administered by the Virginia Golf Foundation which the VSGA was created for the purpose of funding college scholarship to worthy Virginia high school students who have an interest in golf and will attend college within the commonwealth. The criteria for the scholarship are based on academic achievement, an interest in golf (skill level not important), character and financial need.

NAVY-Marine Corps ROTC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Navy-Marine ROTC provides significant financial assistance at over 150 universities and colleges throughout the United States. The scholarship includes money for almost all areas of school expenses including tuition, books, fees and uniforms, along with extra cost associated with being a full-time student. Upon graduation from college scholarship and successful completion of the program participantswill earn a commission as an officer. The process of applying may be started during the second semester of the junior year of high school.

Davis Fellowship – The Davis Fellowship is awarded to one member of each class matriculating at Hampden-SydneyCollege. During his high school years, the Davis Fellow will have demonstrated intellectual competence, energy, competitive instincts, and passion in a area of special interest – whether that be in intellectual achievements, the arts, the sciences, student leadership positions, extracurricular activities, civic affairs, community service, or other endeavors. The Davis Fellow provides grants for full tuition, fees, room, and board for four years. A stipend may be provided for study abroad and summer internships. Students apply for the Davis Fellowship by applying for admission to college.

Hampden-Sydney offers a number of Honors Scholarships and Achievement Awards that recognize outstanding academic and extracurricular achievement. All applicants for admission are considered; no special forms are required.

EastTennesseeStateUniversity sponsors a scholarship for each student selected into the University Honors Program. The university selects twenty-two incoming freshman for the program. THE DOZORETZ NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR MATHEMATICS AND APPLIED SCIENCE

The Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Science (DNIMAS) at Norfolk State University (NSU) is a rigorous honors program for students who major in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or physics provides a full scholarship which covers tuition, fees, room and board and book allowance.

  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale

THE LEE-JACKSON EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Lee-Jackson Foundation in coordination with the VirginiaDepartment of Education sponsors the Lee-Jackson Scholarship Program. The objective of the program is to acquaint young people with the historical legacy of two of Virginia’s most outstanding military figures, General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson.

Eligibility:The student must:

  • Be a high school junior or senior in the state of Virginia
  • Plan to attend a four year college or university or attend a community college and transfer to a four year college or university
  • Write an essay as described in the application materials

Award Amount:One $10,000, nine $2,000, eighteen $1,000 scholarships.

  • $1,000 for each of the three top-ranked essays submitted in each of the eight public school regions of the state.
  • An extra A$1,000 for the essay judged to be the best overall in each of the eight regions.
  • A bonus award of $8,000 will go to the single essay that is judges to be the most outstanding in the state.

JANICE M. SCOTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Mrs. Janice Marie Scott was killed during one of the three terrorist attacks on the morning of September 11, 2001. She was among the 125 individuals who perished in the Pentagon when terrorists crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon. In honor of Mrs. Scott’s commitment to the children of her community, the family created the Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund in October 2001. Six $2,500 scholarships will be made available for high school seniors who graduate in 2010.

Eligibility:Students are selected based on four categories; financial need (40 points), academics (25 points), community service (25 points), and writing skill (10 points) for a total of 100 points.
