COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a skills course that focuses on writing for television newscasts and on providing technical direction for behind- the - scenes directors regarding video tapes, sound bites, live shots, timing, and on screen graphics. Included are analyses of TV news contents, the historic and current impact of television on print journalism and comparisons of various news media.
CLASS SCHEDULE: Starting September 7th, class meets every Monday and Wednesday from 4:30PM to 5:45PM in the Media Arts Department TV Studio. There is no class meeting on Wednesday, November 23rd. The last day of class is Wednesday, December 14th.
TEXT & READINGS: The assigned text for this course is HOW TO WRITE TELEVISION NEWS, by Garth Kant (McGraw Hill). Readings will be assigned weekly. Copies of periodical articles will also be distributed during the course of the semester; other assignments will be available online using links on this syllabus must also submit a working email address you will use for this course to .
FACULTY OFFICE HOURS: The faculty office hour for Professor Lauth is on Mondays from 3:30 to 4:30 PM. Professor Lauth’s office is in Room M306. The faculty office hour for Professor Pison is Wednesdays, 3:30 to 4:30 PM the Journalism Department’s main office on the 4th floor of the M Building. Additional meet times can be scheduled at your convenience.
SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT: Students are required to supply their own videotape stock. Only new, brand name videocassettes should be used. Students will record their class projects on their own tape to have a permanent record of the work they do during the course of the semester.
ATTENDANCE: The projects in this class require cooperative group interaction and participation. Students who are frequently late, or have more than two unexcused absences, run the risk of having their final grade reduced. GRADING: Final course grades will be computed based on class participation (10%), in-class and assigned exercises (25%), 3 quizzes (30%), Box Shot clip (10%), VO clip (10%), and Package (15%).
