Introduction
1.You have been nominated to attend the SERE Aviation Medicine Course at the DSTORAF St Mawgan.
Aim
2.To provide Medical Officers with practical experience of aircrew survival training in land and sea survival drills.
Pre-Course Requirements
3.The SERE Aviation Medicine Course is both arduous and physically demanding; to successfully complete the various exercises students must be physically and medically robust.In accordance with ref A and B, students are to complete Annex Ato this instruction and hand it in on commencement of the course.
Reporting
4.The course lasts for 5 days. Students should assemble in the Student’s Crewroom within the DSTO School House at 0755hrs on the Monday. The course will disperse at approximately 1200hrs on the Friday and students who are transported by taxi, train or chauffeured MT will be released to travel home. Any students who have self-driven to RAF St Mawgan, whether in an MT or private vehicle, will not be released until 0900hrs on the Saturday. Course Details
5.The course provides training in Survival Behaviour, Sea Survival and Protection, Location, Water and Food in land survival.
Administration
6.Security and Fire procedure. On arrival, youare to make yourself aware of the current security and fire procedures in place within RAF St Mawgan accommodation. A comprehensive security and fire procedure brief pertinent to the technical site will be conducted during the course welcome/administration brief.
7.Accommodation. All Students are accommodated in either the Shackleton or Combined Mess. The accommodation will be available for you from the Sunday night prior to the start of the course, to 0800 hours on the morning the course finishes. If you intend to self-drive and hence require accommodation for the Friday night at the end of the course, please contact the Accommodation Cell (Ext 7422) prior to arrival. The Shackleton Mess is a basic facility with single rooms and shared ablutions. Laundry facilities are available in the Station Laundrette. Please be aware that there are no coat hangers provided within therooms. Room keys can be collected in the Combined Mess (Permanent Staff) Reception before 2300 and the Main Guardroom after 2300. The code for entry to the Combined Mess, to collect room keys, can be obtained from the Main Guardroom.
8.Dress. As the course is primarily field-based, students’ dress will be aircrew flying overalls for aircrew and CS 95 for groundcrew/other arms. Issued gloves and worn-in military pattern boots are required.
9.Equipment. You are to be in possession of all the equipment detailed at Annex Bwhen you arrive at 0800hrson the first day of the course. It should be noted that equipment may be lost or damaged due to the arduous nature of the course; the DSTOcannot be held responsible for its replacement, therefore, you are advised to have suitable personal insurance to cover losses of equipment through negligence.

11.Leave. There will be no leave granted until completion of the course.
12.Messing. All meals for Students are taken in either the Combined or Shackleton Mess. On the day of travelling to RAF St Mawgan be aware there is no facility for a meal after 1745 hrs.
13.Monetary Requirements. There is a cash point machine situated in the Atlantic Club foyer.
14.Further Information.
a.Smoking. In line with MOD Policy and RAF St Mawgan Standing Orders smoking is only permitted in designated smoking areas.
b.Bar Facility. The Atlantic Club is an All Ranks bar but Officers, WOs and SNCOs students may also use the Combined Mess (Permanent Staff Mess) Bar; dress regulations apply and can be viewed on the RAF St Mawgan website. All meals must be taken in the Shackleton or Combined Mess.
15.Travelling to RAF St Mawgan:
a. Air. Air South West and Flybe run a regular daily service from many UKairports to Newquay. Flights should be booked through your Sqn or Stn travel cell.
b.Road. Travel on the A30 from Bodmin, take the exit for Newquayand then follow the signs for NewquayAirport. Stay on the A3059 following the signpost for RAF St Mawgan, a map is enclosed. During peak travel times in the summer months allow for up to 3 hours travelling time from Exeter. See Maps at Annex F.
c.Rail. The nearest railway station is Newquay but this closes on occasions during the winter months. Bodmin Parkway has direct links to London and other UK stations and is only a 30 minute drive away from RAF St Mawgan.
Note: Students are NOT entitled to book service transport from Rail and Air heads, they must use public transport or taxi and claim back on JPA.
On arrival at RAF St Mawgan, students should book in at the Main Guardroom where car passes will be issued.
16.Car Parking. There are no garages available. Cars must only be parked in designated parking areas. Temporary vehicle passes can be pre-booked by completingAnnex Gand forwarding it to the address (fax or e-mail) on the form no later than 1 week prior to the course start date. Passes booked in this way last for 2 weeks. Time will be given for students to renew passes for the remainder of the course. If passes are not booked they last only 3 days. Student will have to renew these passes in their own time.

1.General Rules
a.At the DSTO, the Safe System of Training is in place and as such our risk assessments are based on the use of General Service Issued Equipment iaw Service Equipment Scaling Tables or AP 108B-0001-1 (Aircrew Equipment Assemblies) only.
b.Students should bring 3 Layers of clothing (plus waterproofs, where issued) during DSTO Exercises. Students will wear the clothing most appropriate to the weather during the exercises.
c.Additional cold weather equipment and/or sleeping bag may be issued if conditions meet specified parameters.
d.No food, medication, money, credit card, mobile phones or non-issue knives are to be included in your kit or survival tin for this exercise.
