Introduction

1.During the period 17 NOV 2017 TO 22 NOV 2017,BHHSCU will be conducting a 5 daybivouac, atOutdoorAdventureCampCastleMountain training area, 256Webbs creek Rd, Wiseman’s Ferry 2775

2.This activity will provide the opportunity for cadets to practice field craft and consolidate their, Ratel, camouflage and concealment, first aid, navigation, and basic field craft skills in a fieldenvironment, and participate in the offered adventure training offered during this activity.

Aim

  1. The aim of this instruction is to detail all the requirements to enable all BHHSCU members and to attendOAKEN SHEILD 17.

Objectives

  1. The objective of this exercise are,
  • Living in the field, navigation, ratel and orders (SMEAC).
  • Consolidate skills and training received at Unit
  • Assist TRGOFF to identify any shortcomings in the TrgProg
  • Identify and develop personnel with the unit and Coy structure
  • For cadets to participate in an adventure training in a controlled environment.

Attendance

  1. All members of BHHSCU are to attend OAKEN SHEILD 17as per ref B. If any member is unable to attend (Ref A) , they are to:
  2. Cadets are to apply for leave to the unit OC by 15SEPT 17.
  3. ACS are to apply for leave through the chain of command to the XO by 15 SEPT 17.

Dates and Timings

  1. OAKEN SHEILD 17is from 17 NOV TO 22 NOV 17.
  1. Cadets are to report toBaulkham Hills High School Front gate, NLT 160017thNOV 2017. The activity will conclude at Front gate, toBaulkham Hills High SchoolNLT 1600 22 NOV 2017.If a cadet is required to leave the activity early, on any grounds, a request will be made to their nominated NOK to arrange collection.

Documentation

  1. IAW ref A and C, all personnel who will be attending OAKEN SHEILD 17must have completed the Medical/Dietary requimentsforms by15 SEPT 17. If a Health Management Plan (HMP) is required, it is to be handed in at the same time. Failure to do so by this date may mean exclusion from attending.
  2. If there is any change to medical state, information on the nature of the change together with a clearance from the doctor is required. This change is to be forwarded to the Unit Administration Officer and HO/FMO.

Medical

  1. The enrolment forms and HMP for camp should be current and any change to these forms must be completed and returned by Thursday 15SEPT 17. HMP and enrolment details on the permission notes are to reflect any pre-existing condition. The unit OC may require more information prior to the cadet’s attendance (which includes but is not limited to: ingrown toe nails, back injuries, knee injuries, allergies, asthma, special diets).
  2. Personnel who have suffered from a medical condition and where there is a likelihood of a relapse are to include details of the condition (including any medication being taken) on the change of detail enrolment form.
  3. Cadets on medication are to bring a weeks supply in blister packs (e.g. Webster, Persocare). Most pharmacies are able to make these up for individual patients for a small fee, around $5. If pre-packaging is not impossible daily medication requirements are to be stored in snack size zip lock bags and the whole activity’s requirement in the snack size bags are to be placed in a larger zip lock bag.
  4. On all medications, the cadet’s name, and the unit name are to be written on each Webster Pack or bag.
  5. Self-administered items, such as asthma puffers, epi pens require a second to be brought to OAKEN SHEILD 17. One is to be held by the individual and the other by the unit Health Officer in a sealed bag clearly labelled with the person’s name, and condition.

Dress and Equipment

  1. The Personal Equipment List (annex A) contains suggested items that should be packed for OAKEN SHEILD 17.
  2. All belongings must have a name and unit on it so if it is misplaced through the week and found, it can be returned to its owner. Echelon bags, packs and webbing should not have the name directly written on them but have the name placed under the clear plastic name holder on the bag, pack and webbing.
  3. Prior to departure for OAKEN SHEILD 17, all cadets will have their gear checked to ensure essential equipment (enough warm clothes, correct sleeping bag and appropriate wet weather gear) is not left behind. It is advisable not to bring valuables into the field.
  4. Accommodation for the period of this activity is Shelter Individual, or 2 man tents for the over night platoon /ACS may use 2 man tents. All those staying in CASTLEMOUNTAINCamp will have a basic shared cabin.

Prohibited Items

  1. All attendees must adhere to the following rules in regard to prohibited items.
  2. Alcohol is not to be brought or consumed while on the Activity,
  3. Knives, other than the service pocket knife or equivalent, are not to be brought,
  4. Unit or privately owned firearms of any description (this includes models, facsimiles and replicas of firearms) are not to be brought to the Activity.Pyrotechnics and fireworks are also prohibited items and the ignition of such is in direct contravention of ACC Standing Orders,
  5. Jewellery other than one small pair of stud earrings (females) is not to be worn.

Discipline

  1. The Commanding Officer of Baulkham Hills High School Cadet Unit is responsible for the overall conduct and discipline for OAKEN SHEILD 17. You are subject to the provisions of the Australian Army Cadet Policy Manual (ref B) and are subject to the Standing Orders of the AAC whilst participating in the activities being conducted on it.
  2. All personnel attending Exercise “OAKEN SHEILD 17” are to comply with the requirements of the NSW Child Protection laws as applied to the AAC and ADF. Cadets are to comply with Cadet Code of behaviour.
  3. Fraternisation will not be tolerated during Exercise “OAKEN SHEILD 17”. Serious matters will be reported to Military, Federal and/or NSW Police Force
  4. Mobile Phones and personal music devices such as MP3 players, Discmans, IPods etc. are NOT permitted on camp and will be confiscated for the period.
  5. If you are found to be in the possession of alcohol or illegal substances during the conduct of OAKEN SHEILD 17you will be removed from the activity. In the case of illegal substances you will be removed from the activity and the civilian police informed.

Emergency Contact

While away on OAKEN SHEILD 17it is important that cadets leave an emergency contact telephone number with their parents/ guardian. Units will advise cadets of this number on their Joining Instruction, but please tell whoever you give the number to that is for emergencies only

Rations

  1. All cadets and ACSat OAKEN SHEILD 17will be proved with AAC approved rations (Fresh) for the duration of activity, catering by the Outdoor Adventure Company.
  2. Note that special dietary requirements should have been notified to FMO/HMO by 15 SEPT 17 as per ref A. Please note:

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is unable to provide a severe food allergy free environment (such as from peanuts) in relation to the consumption of food during cadet activities. Such a risk may be life threatening for people who suffer from a severe food allergy. It may be in the members’ best interest not to participate in the proposed activity, or to provide, at their own expense, sufficient food to cover theduration of the activity.Cadets should have a good LUNCH prior to reporting toOAKEN SHEILD.

Cadets should have a good breakfast & lunch prior to reporting to the training activity the first meal supplied will be dinner on Friday.

Cost

  1. There is $400 fee for this activity
  2. Anyone with difficulty in meeting this cost should arrange to speak to the XO or OC

Conclusion

  1. OAKEN SHEILD 17is the time to put into practice things learnt at the unit. The best way to enjoy OAKEN SHEILD 17is to have a positive attitude and actively participate during the week
