Johnson, Jensen Top Showmanship Contest at Junior National Hereford Expo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Matt Johnson, Cambridge, Ill., was chosen champion senior showman June 30 at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Grand Island, Neb. Reserve champion was Brooke Jensen, Courtland, Kan. The showmanship contest was sponsored by Sullivan Supply and Stock Show University.

After narrowing the field from 149entries, the top 10 seniors not only had to prove themselves in the showring, but also at the fitting chute. Evaluating the senior division was the father and daughter team of Jerome and Jara Settles, Hoskins, Neb. Tom and Tammy Boatman, Rockford, Ill., 2015 Hereford Herdsmen of the Year assisted with senior finals.

The other senior finalists were: third place – Melissa Grimmel, Jarrettsville, Md.; fourth place – Trent Ray, Abingdon, Ill.; fifth place – Quin Rutt, Campbell, Neb.; sixth place – Cole Moore, Madill, Okla.; seventh place – Amanda Bacon, Siloam Springs, Ark.; eighth place – Kagney Collins, Flanagan, Ill.; ninth place – Harrison McMahon, Ayr, Neb.; and 10th place – Luke Nord, Wolverton, Minn.

In the intermediate division father and daughter team sorted through 224 youth before selectingSam Lawrence, Avilla, Ind., as champion and Lauren May, Mineral Point, Wis., reserve.

Judging the junior and peewee divisions were John and Melody McCurry, Burton, Kan. The McCurrys selectedLauren McMillan, Tiskilwa, Ill.,as champion out of the 220 junior participants. Tate Bittner, Westminster, Md., was selected reserve.

The peewee division included 123 youth with Kade Boatman, Rockford, Ill., being named champion peewee showman and Kenidey Effling, Highmore, S.D., was reserve champion peewee.

A highlight of the showmanship competition is the parade of pre-peewee participants prior to senior finals. This year, 34 Hereford enthusiasts age 5 to 7 participated in the parade and received a special ribbon from the National Hereford Queen Katie Nolles, Bassett, Neb.
