Johnson County Developmental Supports – Community Developmental Disability Organization (CDDO)

Johnson County Developmental Supports is the designated CDDO for Johnson County. The CDDO is the single point of entry for an individual or family to obtain services through the developmental disability system. The CDDO is responsible for determining whether a person qualifies for services, working with the person and/or their family or guardian in choosing from an array of services options, and referring those persons to other agencies if additional supports are needed.

KRS is a state agency whose goal is to help Kansas citizens with disabilities meet their employment goals. Services include counseling and guidance, assessment, work adjustment training, job placement, and funding for training.

Johnson County Mental Health Center offers a wide range of mental health and substance abuse services to residents of Johnson County, Kansas. As a part of the Kansas Public Mental Health system, services are provided according to each individual’s ability to pay. While services are available to all residents, our Mental Health Center serves as a safety net for individuals with the most severe forms of mental illness as well as those who are unable to afford or access care elsewhere in the community.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues. It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled individuals that have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing and shelter.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) pays benefits to individuals and certain members of the individual’s family if the individual is "insured," meaning that the individual worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.

Medicaid is a state-run health insurance program. It is partially funded by the Federal Government. It helpsmany people who cannot afford medical care pay for some or all of their medical bills. Medicaid is available to people and families who have limited income and resources. Peoplewho are blind or disabled, age 65 or older, children, or members of families with dependent children may be eligible. Each state decides who is eligible and the amount of medical care and services it will cover.

The district’s special education program offers a range of educational and related services to students who are eligible for and in need of services and support. Special education is defined as specialized instruction, programming techniques, facilities, and/or equipment which are necessary for a child to benefit educationally. Programs are available for students with disabilities, ages 3-21, including preschoolers, homebound, hearing impaired or deaf, visually impaired, and students with developmental, learning, physical, health, or severe multiple disabilities.

The Disability Rights Center of Kansas (DRC), formerly Kansas Advocacy & Protective Services (KAPS), is a public interest legal advocacy agency empowered by federal law to advocate for the civil and legal rights of Kansans with disabilities. DRC is the Official Protection and Advocacy System for Kansas and is a part of the national network of federally mandated and funded protection and advocacy systems. As such, DRC advocates for the rights of Kansans with disabilities under state or federal laws (ADA, the Rehabilitation Act, Federal Medicaid Act, Kansas Act Against Discrimination, etc.)
