Minutes for the meeting Monday, October 18th, 2010

In Attendance: Karen Anderson, Greg McLeod, Marianne Scott, Sherry Mowbray, Andrea Hawkins, Maria Vlachopoulos, Angela Malcolm, Wendy Waldbauer-LeBlanc, Yorly Pinango, Sibel Yalin, Michele Walsh, Catherine Jackson, Sonja Stefanovic, Darlene Holland, Antonella Anagnostopoulos

We welcomed Karen Anderson as this year’s School Council Chair. Karen was gracious enough to accept her nomination and it’s great for this group to have a fresh start.

1. Council Chair’s Report:

  • Treasurer, Yorly Pinango reported that the curriculum night BBQ raised $521.86 and the account now stands at $1798.20
  • Last year’s donation from the Me to We Minga’s was discussed regarding the fact that the money was never actually given to the School Council.
  • Karen requested volunteers for the positions of Secretary and Treasurer. Darlene Holland volunteered for the position of Secretary.
  • Fundraising: Mr. McLeod asked if the School Council would take on organization of the Fun Fair this year. Those in attendance agreed to do so and decided the Fun Fair would be the focus of fundraising for the group this year. It was decided that the event would be held on a Saturday this year. Date still to be determined.
  • Fundraising Goals: it was decided that playground equipment is as a goal for our group is unrealistic and a notice would be sent home to parents explaining that the funds will be redirected. Investing in our library was discussed as an alternative. Contributing funds towards uniforms for the school teams was also discussed.
  • Principles Report - EQAO - below level in all areas- school will be reviewing these results and implementing ways for improvements in all areas
  • Parents as Partners - Parents play an important role in the school community, The areas that will be addressed are: Budgets, School Improvement Plan, Safe and Caring Committee these three areas will be discussed as sub-committees with Greg, meetings are set for Tuesday Oct 26 at 4:00pm - Darlene, Sonya, Angela will be attending
  • 4th Annual Parents make a difference conference will be held on Saturday November 13, 2010 from 9:00am - 3:00pm ay Earl Haig Secondary School
  • School website needs to be updated, meeting minutes from last year are still posted
  • Class timetable needs to be sent out again as parent are still unsure of the school schedule
  • Suggestions to have a tour of the facility at the start of our next meeting - Greg to organize
  • Next Meeting date: Monday November 8 (time do be determined as concerns about the meeting being too late was discussed)
