Mission Statement: I use multiple mediums to explore shape and volume as a sculptural painter. Principle mediums include encaustics, photography, wood and metal. Work is often complex, exploring the interaction of line within and outside (shadows created through changing light) of the piece. I am interested in pushing the viewer to look at the work from multiple perspectives and consider how the parts look individually and combine as a whole.

Work is heavily influenced by architecture, industrialized shapes, and manufactured objects. These sources have strong lines with color fields that are often more opaque. Nature, and in particular rivers and creeks, influences my sense of movement and dynamic motion within the piece. When I look at water that is moving, there is the ribbon of continuity, but between are often rocks and other features that create strong points of interest. In this way, I am drawn to consider how points of interest and continuity interact and connect through line and composition.

My pieces are full of texture, layers and depth that can and need to be walked around and viewed from different points and perspectives. I encourage the viewer to be active in the experience by inviting interaction from differing perspectives. Many of my pieces have hints of sculptural qualities that pop from the wall. This creates shadows and movement within and outside of the piece.

Vision Statement:

I am interested in continuing the exploration of shape and form through the usage of multiple mediums. Due to dimensionality, there are often strong shadows that influence colors and create lines that are cast outside of the frontal color plane. This interaction can be playful or harsh, depending on the lighting. It is through this that the viewer can and does act as a participant (through placement of themselves) in the piece. I am interested in encouraging an active interaction and exploration of how the viewer can choose the place, in time, to experience the art.
