Job Summary

The Starting Point is a dedicated education setting within Henshaws Specialist College for young adults with Autism to follow specially adapted educational programmes to prepare them for adulthood. A dedicated setting, which is equipped with a classroom, teaching kitchen, sensory room and safe space, this heralds the start of an individual’s journey at Henshaws as they prepare to take the next steps into the main College and beyond. This key role will lead learning and deliver high quality teaching and learning across the Employability/Independence/PSD programme areas under the direction of the Programme Leader.

Key responsibilities

  • To lead individual study programmes designing timetables to meet the characteristics and aspirations of learners.
  • To provide course oversight for a small group of students, including monitoring progress towards goals through monitoring of milestones; provide reports on student progress
  • Up to 24 hours contact time per week with students for up to 37 weeks of the year; support non term time planning and support for students with ASC
  • Produce schemes of work and session plans that link to a range of curriculum strands and vocational streams; develop assessment plans and use Databridge to effectively develop scheme of work, tracking of assessments and session planning
  • Communicate effectively with students; use or be prepared to learn commonly used communication strategies
  • Develop, maintain, and ensure the effective use of,course materials and appropriate educational resources to deliver high quality teaching and learning through a range of activities for a broad range of students with varying disabilities and learning difficulties at a pace and level which meet the students’ needs.
  • Support the effective operation of the college timetable and extended curriculum, ensuring compliance with funders’ contracts.
  • Teach accredited awards and non-accredited pathways as appropriate; ensure compliance with awarding body frameworks and quality assurance arrangements.
  • Ensure that pre-entry assessment and planning is effective, develop behaviour plans and risk assessments for individual students and review and improve on study
  • Plan and deliver high quality transitional arrangements for students into and leaving the College
  • Encourage and promote students to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • Ensure and support students to understand and demonstrate positive behaviours consistent with the Code of Conduct.
  • Assess, record and report on the progress and achievement of students, providing regular contributions to student review reports.
  • Support the students’ personal development and transition needs through liaison with Student Support Assistants, Care Managers and the Transition Team.
  • Direct Student Support Assistants to meet student and session requirements, providing coaching to SSAs where appropriate.
  • Liaise with other education, therapies and care staff to support the students to enjoy and achieve their agreed outcomes to study.
  • Ensure compliance with the College quality systems and contribute to the self assessment process as required.
  • Carry out effective administration duties within the role in a timely manner
  • Attend all Henshaws mandatory and compulsory training sessions, taking responsibility to ensure training is up to date at all times.
  • Take responsibility for your own personal and professional development, including CPD where appropriate.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing across Henshaws Society, and other providers where appropriate.
  • Offer a flexible approach to working hours to meet the needs of the organisation.
  • Represent Henshaws in professional manner at all times, contributing to marketing and recruitment activities for Henshaws Society as required and acting as an effective ambassador for the college and Henshaws Society.
  • Where appropriate, undertake work in other locations in order to ensure obligations to students, service users and third parties are fulfilled.
  • Comply with Henshaws Health & Safety requirements and be aware of and adhere to current Henshaws policies and procedures.
  • Any other duty as required by the line manager commensurate with the post.
