OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

To manage and develop SWT Ecology Services.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Line management of Ecology Services Team and liaison with sub-contractors.
  1. Responsible for the day to day running of Ecology Services;
  1. Overseeing project management.
  1. Responsible for quality control; ensuring surveys and reports undertaken by Ecology Services follow best practice and are of a consistently high standard.
  1. Financial management of both Ecology Services budget and ensuring accurate costing and budgets on commissioned projects.
  1. Undertaking site surveys as required.
  1. Ensure provision of ecological advice both internally (for SWT, members of the public and SWT members) and externally (non SWT clients).
  1. Marketing of Ecology Services, identifying new projects, areas of research and funding opportunities.
  1. Liaising with SWT’s Countryside Management department to deliver ecological component of site management plans and monitoring strategies.
  1. Supervision of volunteers as appropriate.
  1. Support the wider Biodiversity, Evidence & Policy (BEP) Department and organisation as a whole as required.

EXPERIENCE

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • At least five years relevant experience within the ecological consultancy sector
  • Producing quotes for ecological surveys
  • Experience of managing teams and employing sub-contractors
  • Sound protected species survey and mitigation experience
  • Experience with the planning process
  • Degree in ecology or other relevant subject

KNOWLEDGE

  • Good understanding of a range of ecological and habitat management issues
  • Budget and Project Management
  • Good knowledge of relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of protected species including survey and mitigation techniques
  • Knowledge of computer programmes including Word, Excel and Access, ideally also Recorder and GIS (MapInfo).

SKILLS

  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Quality Control and proof reading
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to undertake Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
  • Ideally hold at least one European Protected Species survey license
  • Ideally be able to undertake EPS mitigation license applications for at least one species
  • Driving licence
  • Membership of CIEEM
