Job Purpose:

To engage workplaces and their employeesin and around the Irvinearea through a wide range of techniques, activities and events which will encourage an increase in sustainable travel modes such as cycling and walking, an increase in patronage on rail and bus services and a reduction in single-occupancy car journeys.

Dimensions of role:

This role will deliver engagement activities, working alongside the Active Travel and Transport team at North Ayrshire Council,to employees in major, medium and small employers in and around Irvine, Largs, Garnock Valley & North Coast areas of North Ayrshire. The role’s key aim will be to increase walking, cycling and sustainable travel and create transport modal shift from single-occupancy car travel.

Background:

Sustrans is a leading UK charity enabling people to travel by foot bike or public transport for more of the journeys we make every day. One aspect of our work is our Smarter Choices behaviour change programme, working in workplaces, schools, and communities across the UK to encourage active travel.

Regional organisational structure:

The post holder will report to theSmarter ChoicesWorkplace Coordinator based in Edinburgh, and will be part of the North Ayrshire CouncilActive Travel and Transport team based in Cunninghame House in Irvine. The role will link to officers delivering active and sustainable travel programmes in workplaces throughout the UK.

Key responsibilities:

1.To provide support to engaged organisations to produce Development Plans in order to help overcome barriers to sustainable travel for commuting journeys and business trips.

2.To co-ordinate Workplace activities and act as a central liaison for participants, stakeholders, local partners and the central challenge team.

3.To develop and implement an effective marketing and engagement strategy to engage key organisations in Irvine, Largs, Garnock Valley & North Coast areas of North Ayrshire.

4.To deliver activities and events to encourage and promote sustainable travel in line with the needs of individual workplaces, including working with local partners.

5.To support at least 5 workplaces to become Cycling Scotland Cycle Friendly Employer accredited.

6.To work with an organisation’s internal departments e.g. internal communications / Human Resources to promote and facilitate our engagement activities.

7.To liaise with North Ayrshire Council to maximise close working with the Active Travel and Transport Manager, Access Officer, Business Developmentteam and other relevant local authority departments.

8.To support the delivery of the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places funded Travel Smart project in partnership with North Ayrshire Council.

9.To provide excellent customer service and support to all workplaces.

10.To manage project budget.

11.To ensure that project monitoring data is gathered and processed to evidence progress in encouraging participants to travel more sustainably.

12.To ensure that project reporting documentation is completed and processed on time.

13.To ensure the delivery of the project follows Sustrans Health and Safety guidelines regarding the management of such projects and the assessments of risks.

  • To attend essential Sustrans training as required by the Charity.
  • To ensure own personal development by working to objectives set as part of the Charity’s appraisal process.

Working Conditions:

The post will be based inIrvineand will include a significant amount of time at workplaces around the area. Work outside normal office hours will be required, including occasional weekend hours. The post holder will be trained in Sustrans workplace engagement.

The postholder will be based within the Sustrans Smarter Choices team. They will work in close partnership with local authority staff and their delivery partners, as well as other Sustrans regional staff and the Sustrans Behaviour Change team based in Bristol.

The postholder will be required to work in areas across North Ayrshire. In order to reach these locations the postholder will have access to a North Ayrshire Council Pool Vehicle. The postholder must hold a current, clean UK driving licence.
