1 Introduction and background

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations is the national body representing charities and the voluntary sector.

We employ around 100 staff based across five offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.

2 Job context

SCVO is seeking an experienced and talented developer to join our growing web and digital services team. Ideally the developer will have at least two years professional experience, though it will also be sufficient to demonstrate a deep understanding of the core technologies we work with.

This role will involve working with a wide range of new projects as well as providing some support and iterative development to old applications. Most of our websites and digital services are hosted on Microsoft’s Azure platform, although we also have a small number of legacy websites to be migrated or decommissioned.

3 Person Specification

This is a broad role and we will expect you to have a strong understanding of how the fundamentals of the internet and web applications work.

You will be expected to support and deal with bugs reported by end users so experience in a customer facing role and with troubleshooting would be desirable.

You will have a passion for new technologies and for continuously improving the performance of the products and services we run. You will understand the importance of starting from user needs and for iterating based on user feedback.

The post will involve planning and managing your own projects, as well as requirements capture from external and senior colleagues.

The Web Developer will be expected to demonstrate the following experience, knowledge and skills:

Essential

·  Web application development and maintenance (including knowledge of or willingness to work with C#, .NET and some PHP)

·  HTML, JavaScript and CSS, including responsive and accessible web development

·  Database design, SQL

·  Common CMS platforms (e.g. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Umbraco)

·  Browser compatibility, QA, unit testing and integration testing

·  Version control and deployment

·  DevOps experience including hosted environments, domains and Linux CLI

Desirable

·  Microsoft Azure

·  MySQL, MS SQL and SQL Server

·  Common web frameworks (e.g. Angular, Laravel, Rails)

·  Salesforce including Apex and Force.com

·  Experience working in an agile development environment (e.g. Scrum, Kanban)

4 Specific duties

The specific duties of the Web Developer are:

·  Supporting and maintaining a number of existing ASP.NET applications

·  Supporting and maintaining a number of existing WordPress instances

·  Migrating and decommissioning various websites and services

·  Developing and continuously improving new websites and digital services

·  Working with our web development and design manager to deliver a refreshed main website for SCVO that is focused on meeting user needs and is simpler, clearer and faster

·  Working with colleagues across the organisation to ensure that SCVO sets a high standard in the quality of its web and digital services when it comes to charity use of the internet

·  Assisting in the maintenance of our Microsoft Azure environment and any other new hosted environments / services that are required in future

5 Other duties

The post holder may, from time-to-time, be required to undertake other reasonable duties as deemed necessary by the line manager and / or SCVO. All teams are expected to share workloads and to be able to ensure continuity during peak periods, sickness absence and holidays.

6 Location/Accountability

The post is based in Edinburgh.

The post holder will report to SCVO's Web Development and Design Manager.

Contributory pension scheme SCVO offers a Defined Contribution Pension Scheme to its staff. Employee contributions are 6% or 3%, SCVO contributes 9% or 4.5%.
