Job Title:Stage Technician (Flying & Rigging)
Department:Production
Responsible to:Head of Stage (Line Manager)

Responsible for:Part Time/Casualstaff
Main Purpose:To work collaboratively across the stage team and as part of an integrated production department.
To oversee and carry out flying and rigging activitiesas well as undertake production get-ins, get-outs and show operation for Sheffield Theatres’ and touring productions in all Sheffield Theatres venues and, as required, in any other venues.
To work with the production department to support the production, rehearsal and performanceprocesses.
Key Responsibilities:
- To prepare stage equipment for use in performance including installing and rigging stage equipment and scenery in accordance with the requirements of the Head of Stage and Deputies
- Actively participatein fit-ups, get-ins, builds, production weeks, show operation, strikes and get-outs for all typesof rehearsals and productions and be available for production meetings as required
- To supervise flying and rigging activity using counterweight and automated systems, chain hoists and other temporary rigging solutions
- To ensure all flying and rigging equipment is fit for use and conforms to legal requirements as specified by LOLER and PUWER legislation
- To ensure all fixed and loose flying / rigging equipment and installations have appropriate SWL or WLL signage and conform to the LOLER regime
- To develop, maintain and keep an up to date inventory of all loose flying/rigging equipment and accessories and carry out regular visual inspections that are recorded against a maintenance log
- Ensure all working practices comply with Health and Safety legislation including policies and procedures emanating from Sheffield Theatres’ Health and Safety policy
- Work in collaboration with guest company representatives and Sheffield Theatres’ creative staff and other departments to ensure maximum efficiency in the production process
- Ensure good housekeeping of the backstage areas, including the effective storage and maintenance of tools, equipment, materials and scenery. Report any defects or faults not within your control
- To be open to personal development initiatives and to train and develop in order to achieve the highest standards of safety, efficiency and operation
General:
- As a term of your employment you may also be asked to undertake other such appropriate duties as and when required of you, as well as being asked to work flexible hours to suit the operation of the organisation
- Participate in all training and development initiatives as required to include, if required, being trained in First Aid, Fire Marshalling and the use of a defibrillator
- To assist with the delivery of informal training programmes in flying / rigging and general stage craft
PERSON SPECIFICATION/ COMPETENCIES
Essential:
- Formal technical theatre training or qualified by experience
- Experience of maintaining high standards of staging provision through awareness of best practice, including Health & Safety and implementing effective procedures
- Good knowledge and experience of stage, flying and rigging equipment, including counterweight flying systems
- Experience of using chain hoists and control equipment in a theatrical or event context
- Experience in using Flying / Rigging equipment and techniques for use in a theatrical context
- Working knowledge of relevant H&S legislation and procedures including LOLER, PUWER and Working at Height
- Excellent problem solving and decision making
- Interest in and an empathy for the arts
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including a good standard of spoken and written English
- Good ICT skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook
- Excellent organisational skills with a high level of attention to detail and ability to manage heavy and sometimes pressurised work-loads efficiently and effectively, whilst meeting non-negotiable deadlines (First Night)
- Enthusiasm and calmness – to lead by example
- A team-player who is personable, diplomatic and has the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels both internally and externally
Desirable:
- Formal technical theatre training
- Experience of working in produced, co-produced and touring theatre
- Formal training in theatrical or event rigging
- Welding / Fabrication or carpentry skills
- Full clean driving license. Driving the company van may be required
MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Pay:£20,685.60 per year (£10.20 per hour). Premium payment (at half time or single time extra as applicable) will be paid for hours worked; after midnight, before 8.00am Sundays, 6th weekday worked and Public Holidays. Plus Get-Out pay.
Probation:Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a 6 month probation period.
Hours:This is an annualised hours contract for an average of 39 hours per week.
Hours worked above or below 39 in any one week (within certain limits) will not alter the standard pay. Hours worked in excess of the contracted annual total will be paid. Additional hours including Sundays get-ins and get-outs, production weeks, Christmas, Public Holidays may be necessary in accordance with the requirements of the organisation.
Holidays:Holiday entitlement is 5 weeks 4 days per year increasing by a day each year up to a maximum of 6 weeks 4 days after five years’ service. This holiday entitlement includes Public Holidays.
Pension: On successful completion of the probationary periodyou are eligible to join a defined benefits pension scheme (The People’s Pension) with an employer contribution of 3.5% of basic pay and a minimum matching employee contribution. During your probation you will be auto enrolled into The People’s Pension in accordance with statutory deadlines and contributions.
