Hours of Work:Full Time 36.25 hours per week, 5 days per week, 8.30am-4.50pm
Mon-Thurs, 8.30am-4.25pm Fri
Location:Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Tower Building, Aerospace Technology Centre and Energies Technology Building.
Reporting to:Colin Blackburn (Senior Technical Manager)
Purpose of the New Role:
Overall the functions of this senior Electrical technician role areto support the PEMC group research projectsensuring that timescales, deliverables and safety are not compromised.
This will involve the project management of the research and the supervision of electrical technicians to deliver highly specialized electrical installations to aid research.
Main Responsibilities / % time per year1. / Electrical installations
To assist through close interaction with Researchers, Academics and the specialist electrical team in the design, construction and testing of a wide range of electrical installations. Knowledge of the following is required.
Low voltage 0-1000v + High Voltage systems.
Multi frequency supply systems.
High Power DC systems.
Renewable energy systems.
Inverter + Plc control. / 30%
2. / Supervision
To supervise a small team of electrical technicians and contractors through day to day time management procedures to ensure that completion dates are achieved.
Prioritisation of workload across the Tower, ATC and ETB laboratories through direct communication with external suppliers to ensure that work can be completed on time. / 20%
3. / Safety
To work closely with senior electrical technicians to ensure that health and safety standards are adhered too within the PEMC group laboratories to meet electrical wiring regulations.
This is achieved through the day to day monitoring of the various research experiments and the issuing of the relevant Health and Safety documentation that needs to be authorised by the technical team before the experiment is energised. / 20%
4. / Project Management
To contribute to research project planning meetings as a technical representative to offer guidance and advice through close interaction between academics, researchers and the technical team to ensure that the technical support is delivered within the deadlines agreed and to the correct quality standards.
This will include producing procedures with the relevant documentation to help in the smooth running of the project. / 15%
5. / Electrical design
To assist in the design, construction and testing of a wide range of bespoke electrical installations that include three phase and single phase installations along with multi frequency, high voltage and DC systems.
Assist the senior technical team in producing up to date complex safety interlocks systems for the electrical/mechanical test beds. / 10%
6. / Rig operation
To assist the senior electrical technicians in the day to day management of a wide variety of high speed and high power electrical/mechanical test rigs through administrating the documentation needed before testing can commence. / 5%
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Essential / DesirableQualifications/ Education / HNC or equivalent, plus substantial work experience in a relevant role.
OR
Proven track record with extensive work experience in a relevant role.
Full electrical Apprenticeship
17th Edition Requirements for Electrical Installations.
2391 Inspection, Testing and Certification / HND in relevant Engineering Discipline or Degree.
Knowledge of HV systems.
Skills/Training / The planning and execution of electrical installations in a laboratory or Industrial environment.
The ability to produce proven documents and reports in planning and testing of the research projects which include relevant safety documents.
The interpretation and implementation of work related regulations and procedures and an understanding of the implications of non-compliance on other staff and the University (e.g. Health and Safety).
Ability to communicate clearly to non-specialist and senior level audiences. / Electrical knowledge of Motors.
Knowledge of High Power electronic devices and assemblies.
Skills in the installation and programming of PLC’s
Knowledge of PV and renewable installs
Fork truck license
Full Driving license
Relevant IT skills.
Experience / Substantial proven experience in an electrical engineering background / Experience of working in a specialist research facility
Proven experience as a team leader.
Statutory/Legal / Understanding of Health & Safety regulations and procedures
