Job description

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Communications and Public Affairsteam. You’ll help make a real difference to those affected by cervical cancer and abnormalities as well as getting us closer to our vision of eradicating the disease.

Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust is the only UK charity for women affected by cervical cancer and cervical abnormalities. You’ll be joining the team at an exciting time, we are growing and reaching more women than every before, 2019 is also our 20th anniversary and we have lots to celebrate.

The Senior Communications Officer plays a key role in developing and delivering creative campaigns and communications to reach a wide range of audiences, including increasing public awareness and influencing policy.We are looking for someone who can spot a story and secure media opportunities across broadcast, national, regional and trade press. You’ll have excellent writing skills, strong attention to detail and be confident with using a range of channels to reach diverse audiences and achieve organisational goals.

The role will build and manageour database of case studies with compassion and empathy, and create and lead on the production of a range of materials including our annual review, newsletters and reports.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Work with the Head of Communicationsand Public Affairsto scope and deliver effective and creative charity campaigns
  • Provide communications support to teams across the charity, proactively identifying opportunities to promote their work
  • Identify and create broadcast, print and online opportunities and sell in to the media
  • Write and issue press releases, comments and quotes
  • Contribute to policy development including analysing research, writing comments, reports and briefings
  • Managethe charity’s case study database including interviewing new case studies
  • Evaluate the success of communications, providing reports and identifying areas for development and opportunities
  • Draft copy for a range of online and print communications including blog posts, articles and our website
  • Manage the monthly e-newsletter including collating and writing content
  • Contribute to social media including out of hours monitoring (on rota)
  • Be a brand ambassador and support staff to make effective use of the charity’s brand
  • Work with external suppliers to produce high quality printed materials including reports and annual reviews
  • Assist on the development of films, both internally and working with suppliers
  • Assist with celebrity/influencer acquisition and liaison
  • Work with the Communications Assistant to ensure coverage reports and press lists are up to date
  • Occasional out of hours media work or opportunities to represent the charity at external events
  • To maintain confidentiality in relation to employee and service user data and other sensitive information
  • Work in accordance with Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust code of conduct, equality and diversity policy, health and safety policy and other policies as applicable.

Skills and Experience
Essential / Desirable
Proven experience in a public relations or general communications role / Experience in policy creation and/or public affairs
An excellent communicator with the ability to build strong relationships with a wide range of individuals / Familiarity with the voluntary and/or health sector
Strong written skills including the ability to tell stories effectively and communicate scientific subject matter in an easy to understand way / Experience of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
Experience in generating coverage in a variety of media with a strong understanding of the needs and expectations of different media / Experience of video creation
Creative with the ability to spot a story and secure proactive and reactive opportunities / Experience of using Mailchimp
Ability to self-manage and work on own initiative as well as working as part of a team
Excellent attention to detail and proof reading skills
Flexible with the ability to multi task and deal with changing priorities
Ability to work in under pressure in a fast-paced environment while adhering to deadlines
Good IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office suite
Experience in working with external suppliers including designers and printers
