BACKGROUND

The Engagement and Income Generation Directorate

The E & IG directorate was established in December 2012 following an organisational restructure which brought the Fundraising and Communications functions together to realise our ambitious plans for growth in income and engagement.

The Team

The Communications & Brand Management team will be responsible for delivering communications of the highest quality to support the delivery of the Engagement Strategy. Responsibility for brand development, corporate and internal communications will sit in the team, together with generation of content, developing and producing digital assets, management of the website, SEO, PR, Media and management of celebrity relationships. Through a combination of in-house expertise and specialist agencies the communications will be fully integrated in print and digital channels to attract new supporters and retain existing ones.

Purpose of Role

The role provides operational communication and branddevelopment expertise to ensure consistency in message and visual identity development across all external print communications, Breakthrough’s website(s) and digital assets.

Through managing the Communications & Brand Team the post holder will develop plans and processes to deliver quality communications in order to attract and maintain significant support for the charity.

Key Responsibilities

Team Management and Development

  • Manage and motivate a high performing team of specialists to deliver compelling communications across all channels to secure engagement with the charity.
  • Ensure regular 1-1s, progress reviews and personal development plans are carried out with each member of the team.

Communications and Brand Management

  • Develop and manage an annual communications calendar to include key moments and communications priorities as defined by the marketing plan. Ensure the brand is managed consistently across the calendar’s outputs, maximising opportunities to raise Breakthrough’s profile and attract engagement.
  • Ensure the brand is safeguarded, managed, developed and used appropriately.
  • Oversee the development of a bank of communication messages, stories and assets to be used across all channels to promote Breakthrough’s ‘compelling story’.

Digital management and development

  • Manage the development and maintenance of Breakthrough’s website ensuring it is user centric and development is informed by appropriate data and analysis.
  • Develop appropriate plans to produce compelling assets to support Breakthrough’s fundraising needs and grow the profile of the charityeg: microsites, video, apps etc.
  • Manage the development of content for our owned digital channels.
  • Ensure all digital assets and communications are fully optimised through supervision of Breakthrough’s search strategy, PPC etc.
  • Ensure Breakthrough keeps abreast of the digital landscapes and takes best advantage of technologicaland digital development.

Supporter communications

  • Supervisethe development and delivery of Breakthrough’s communications to its supporters including all print publications and e-newsletters.
  • Oversee the organisational-wide content collection and channel selection process,ensuring communications are delivered to supporters on a timely basis to ensure engagement and continuing support for the charity.

PR and media relations support

  • Working closely with the PR Manager, ensure all Breakthrough’s communications are fully integrated ensuring all PR opportunities – including social media are represented across all Breakthrough channels maximising all opportunities for engagement.
  • Working closely with the PR Manager, ensure the 24 hour press office is supported by appropriate digital team members.

Supplier management

  • Manage and maintain relationships with Breakthrough’s lead digital agency.
  • Manage and maintain relationships with brand development agencies.
  • Manage all legal requirements for activities undertaken.

Breakthrough Ambassador

  • Represent Breakthrough at relevant events, being an ambassador for the charity with our supporters.
  • Support and deliver other projects and tasks, in line with your skills and experience that might occur within E&IG and contribute to our overall organisational objectives above and beyond your role.

Planning, reporting and budgets

  • Plan and leadteam to achieve team, department and organisational objectives and KPIs.
  • Ensure that the department’s budget spreadsheet is kept up to date.
  • Manage the annual planning andbudgeting for areas of accountability
  • Provide regular reports, budgets and plans for the Assistant Director and organisation as required.
  • Working with the PR manager, develop and manage effective briefing processes.
  • Develop and maintain accurate, up-to-date and organised records for all supporters and prospects using Breakthrough’s database. Ensure all partner information is managed and stored in-line with Data Protection regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES

Essential

  • Significant experience of building, managing and developing direct line reports.
  • Experience in cross organisational relationship building and collaborative working environments – with excellent communication and influencing skills.
  • Clear understanding of the opportunity available between digital and traditional media channels (press & broadcast).
  • Significant experience in planning projects and managing them in a timely manner.
  • Significant experience of managing and strategically developing communications and brands across a variety of channels.
  • Significant experience of managing content development across a variety of channels.
  • Experience in managing (and challenging) brand, communications, digital and creative agencies and excellent negotiating skills.
  • Demonstrable technical understanding in order to manage and maximise the use of digital technology.
  • Experience of digital and traditional marketing – BTL and TTL.
  • Excellent project management skills with an ability to implement and coordinate large projects.
  • Strong ability to develop effective and practical systems and processes.
  • Experience of managing and monitoring budgets.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Salary:£42,000 - £48,000

Term of appointment:Permanent

Hours of work:35 hours per week. We also operate a TOIL scheme.

Annual Leave:25 days per year plus 3.5 days between Christmas and New Year in addition to bank and public holidays
